I went to my GP today and talked to him about genetic testing and he said to wait and do another sweat test.
Blah, blah, blah <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-frown.gif" border="0">

That is booked for the 2nd of March.

The reason we were there was to find out the results from tests Shea had done for her recurrent urinary tract infections. We were refeered to a urologist.

So now Shea has another doctor and more issues and fewer answers.

Oddly enough the urologist is the brother of the pediatric gastronologist. I laugh at this because they share an office and the gasto is in office 1 and the urologist is in office 2. I think it should be the other way around, lol.

Shea also had a barium swallow today and she was a trooper, so proud of her.

Do any of your children have recurrent UTIs? What about esophageal stenosis?

And I have read that some CF patients take Prevacid, Shea was given that at 15mg a day. What do CF patients take that for?

Thanks for reading and for any advice.

Hi Robin,
My son has been on prevacid from the time he was an infant. He started on 30 mg a day and when he was about 5 was boosted to 30 mg. twice a day. I'm sorry you are having so much trouble! Keep us posted.

CF patients are given Prevacid or Prilosec for not only reflux, but also because the pancreas as you know is blocked with mucus and it inhibits not only the digestive enzymes but also the bicarbonate that neutralizes the stomach acid. Since their stomach's are more acidic, the enzymes can't break down fully because they won't break down until they are in a basic environment. The addition of an antacid allows the stomach to be more basic in order for the enzymes to work to their greatest potential.

My dd w/cf does not have UTIS but I have had them for more than 30 years now. When a girl has recurrent UTIs you need to get a kidney x ray and cystography (it is a bladder x ray), I am sure your urologist would suggest that, but I mention it just in case. Often UTIs in children result from reflux (urine going back up to the kidney b/c of a falty valve) that can be easily corrected through surgery.

When I was a child my doctor missed that and I have kidney scarring as a result.

Of course there might be a different reason for your child's UTIs, but if it was my child I would rule out the falty valve first to be sure.
