As a mother without CF but to a 3 year old with CF and a healthy 1 year old, I just have to say...You ladies are all AMAZING. Having a baby and all the postpartum stuff is so hard and I cannot imagine how hard it must be to have all the CF stuff in addition to that. I've been reading your posts and am in awe of your strength and tenacity. Your children are very lucky to have you as their moms.

I hope I can raise my son with CF to be as strong as you guys- face his CF and live life to the fullest despite the obstacles. All your children are beautiful!

Megan, mom to Aidan 3 with CF and Gavin 1, no CF (IVF/PGD)

Hey Leah,

I haven't posted in several months, just lurking every now and then because I've been busy with the kids. So, congratulations to you and your wife with the addition of Gavin to your family. He and Landon are both such handsome boys!

I just want to say that I am concerned that your pft's have dropped so much. I know some drop is expected, but that seems like a signifigant drop and adding to that the loss of sleep your body needs to recoup, you may want to take action sooner than next month. I know, I just rebounded myself.

With both of my pregnancies, I only dropped about 7-8% shortly after giving birth. I didn't really drop (20%)unitl about 7 months after with my first and I made it to 13 months with my second. My baseline is in the mid 50's and has been for over 10 years. However, I've been able to maintain in the 60's from just before this pregnancy to giving birth (down to 55%) and then bounced back up to 60's within a month. I stayed there for a year. Last month I had a drastic and surprising drop to 34% and I didn't even feel THAT bad! Needless to say, I welcomed the PICC! After 5 days of prednisone and only 7 days of IV's, I was back to 59. Another week and a half of IV's and I'm still there.

I just wanted to share my experience because my baseline is much lower than yours and I didn't have that drastic of a drop related to the pregnancy. It's the daily care that can take it out of you. I know you know that with Landon, but with two it only gets worse, especially with their young ages.

I was able to do all my IV's at home and I feel like that really helped me.

I think it is at least worth a call back to your clinic to see if you can take something orally or start SOMETHING before too long. I'm afraid you'll get even more run down and have more ground to make up in recovering. I hope you take this advice as concern from a fellow mommy whose been there. Good luck and keep hanging in there! Congrats on your family again!

Leah,

That is a really big drop, it sounds like you are sick. I think my PFT's prior to diagnosis last year were somewhere between 82-89%. At 20 weeks pregnant I was at 72% (my first post diagnosis PFT). No PFT's were done during the rest of my pregnancy because I have reactive airways and doc didn't want to cause any problems being that she didn't know what condition my lungs were in. I am guessing I went lower, I was uncomfortable at the end. A month and a half post partum I was at 82%. My doc had me walk every single day for at least 30 minutes. That helped me recover from my c-section but also regain lung function I guess. I did 30-120 minutes of walking every day of the week and I still do (and I jog on my treadmill or with my jogging stroller). I was using HTS a few times a week too. In June my PFTs were 91% and I was considered fully recovered from the pregnancy. My doc now has me doing HTS every day. I go back in 2 weeks so I'll let you know if I gain anything more since it's almost a year post partum now.
My advice is to get whatever treatment you need if you are sick and get moving every day-even if you walk around the block pushing the stroller or shop, circle the mall on rainy days...that's what my doc told me to do and it helped tremendously. I had a fitness test in the spring and I was stronger than I realized. Not sure what your pancreatic status is but I'm PS and I lost 20 lbs 2 weeks post partum and then slowly lost the rest of the 37 lbs I packed on.
Hope this helps in some way. Hang in there mama! Get your butt moving!

Haley- That's good that you were able to bring your PFTs back up. I would not have survived with breastfeeding either, so it's good to know that I'm not the only one who had to stop. I didn't stop originally because of my health, but I'm sure that would've been the case now because it's just too hard on the body. I don't know how people do it! Good luck with the insurance stuff. That can really be a pain sometimes.

Tina- I didn't know Brianna was colicky too. Isn't it rough? We are up with Gavin every night because he just cries and cries. Luckily he has his 1 month appt this week so we're going to make sure it's nothing else besides colic. He's already on special formula but I think he needs something for reflux too. It is definitely hard feeling crappy and having to take care of a baby at the same time. Please PM me with your colic tricks though if you can - I would love to know what helped you! Hope you're feeling better soon

Megan- Thanks for your kind words. And good name...Gavin....

BonnieBaby- Yes, walking...I've been doing that lately. I used to play a lot of organized sports prior to being pregnant but I just don't have that energy yet. I'm trying to get my strength and endurance back. I know it will eventually come back once I can rest again and get a good nights rest. Once the kids are a little older I'd like to get back into soccer and everything.

So I'll be starting Zithro MWF as soon as I get the Rx in the mail and I've also got hooked up with the vest company to get the vest. I've been using the flutter for 15 years now but I think I might need something more. I'm just hoping my insurance covers it. I'm excited to get it because I think it will really help me. Other than that, I'm just going to follow up in the next month and hopefully my PFTs will have improved by then. My cold is gone now so that's a start!

Thanks for all your advice everyone.

BonnieBaby- Yes, walking...I've been doing that lately. I used to play a lot of organized sports prior to being pregnant but I just don't have that energy yet.
