Upper GI test

The Dr. called today and they suggest that our 7 week son go for an upper GI test due to his vomiting. I know that this test has something to do with the gastrointestinal system but I don't know any more than that. Has anyone else had this test and can tell me more about what it is and what I can expect they will do to test my son?

The upper GI test is basically an xray of the GI tract. They'll give your child something to drink that makes the tract show up on xray. My son had it in infancy for the same reason - pretty standard part of checking all the possibilities for a baby that vomits alot. I do not recall my boy's reaction to the stuff he had to drink.

My boy had pretty bad reflux for his first year: we had to hold him up almost 24 hours a day because if he laid down after eating he'd urp - and elevating his crib mattress did not work because he just wriggled himself upside down every time. I can grin at it now as just a wacky part of his infancy - but as a new parent of a CF baby it made for a pretty freaked-out first year. Just know that it does get easier and less unsettling as time goes on. Take care.

Basically they will give him some contrast material in a bottle that will show up white on the x-ray.

They will then likely lay him down under a x-ray machine and take a series of pictures as it moves down his throat, through the stomach and into the small intestines.

They are looking for any abnormalities such as reflux (liquid already in stomach coming back into throat).

You didn't mention but if he is projectile vomiting (forceful and shooting out rather vs onto his shirt/clothes) they could also being checking for a disorder that appears about this age where the fluid flows from stomach into intestines too slowly which I had as an infant and a couple of my kids were evaluated for.
