Urination

This is kind of personal, but I had to ask. Whenever I do my airway clearance therapy I seem to dribble some urine. I usually am coughing quite hard for about 20 minutes and by the end I am slightly wet. I usually do not even really notice it, but if I go to the bathroom right after I have a small wet spot. The thing that worries me is will this get worse with age? If I get a few drips now will I have a lot in 10 years? Does anyone else experience this problem??

I don't think it's uncommon. I have always had a weak bladder, and I think that coughing a lot can have the same effect as laughing really hard. If it bothers you a lot, don't fret talking to a doctor, that is what they are there for.

Have you tried to use the bathroom before you do CPT? I always ask my daughter to try first because we always get halfway through and she needs to go. The coughing makes many waek bladders drip a bit.Andrea

I have the same problem. But mine has been much worse. It has seemed that it gets worse gradually. I too was embarassed to discuss this issue with anyone. It finally got to the point where I did have to discuss it with my doctor. I am glad that I did. Not only was I having problems with leaking with coughing but I was beginning to have chronic UTI's and bladder infections. Apparently with my coughing it caused urinary reflux. Similar to gastric reflux, urine backs up with coughing and it likely to cause infection. Ironically enough the bacteria that I tend to culture pseudomonas in my urine with infections. My husband (also CF) actually has a chronic prostate infection (a male complication caused by the urinary reflux/coughing) and he cultures pseudomonas in urine and prostate fluid. In his case there is nothing that can be done other than manage symptoms but for me they first taught me methods to completely empty my bladder, I make sure that I empty my bladder every 1-2 hours at least. I hope that you can talk to you doctor about this perhaps there are some options that you have available to you. I wish you all well!

I also have the same problem, but slightly worse because I have the problem when I sneeze and sometimes if I laugh really hard. I also try to pee frequently and use light day sanitary napkins everyday so that if I do leak I don't feel so wet.

I have the same problem of a weak bladder when I cough a lot. It seems to be getting worse with age and I grow heavier. As a woman, I also use sanitary pads to help with the wetness. I don't drink as much liquids as I should. That is because I grew up always knowing that I could have a coughing fit at any time, & I didn't want to embarrass myself. I always know where the nearest bathroom is located!
