Using Altera for other meds

Is anyone using their Altera for Pulmozyme or Albuterol/Xopenex? How long does it take? Do you feel that it/they are having as much of an impact as your regular nebulizer? Any side effects?

I have not used my Altera for any other meds, but I have used my eFlow (the one used for tobramycin) for Pulmozyme. My doctor told me to use half a vial. I don't know about Albuterol or Xopenex though.

I was told you can NOT use Altera for other drugs, just the Cayston, However you can use the TRIO for all the other drugs but TOBI would have to be reformulated for the TRIO. I now use my TRIO for only Albuterol and Colistin. The head clogged too much and did not stay running good with pulmozyme and HTS in it. If you want more info and want to get a trio free with your meds etc. Call Foundation Care Pharmacy at 1-877-291-1122.

I use my old head for my HTS seems to work pretty good, not as fast but better than a regular neb. I use the new head for the Cayston. My doc said to try it and see how it goes.

i use a different neb cup or sometimes just a different metal head to keep my other meds separate from the cayston but i do all my meds in the altera/trio/eflow or whatever you want to call it....my docs said that was fine. there has notoriously been a lot of disagreement over what can and cannot be used in these much faster machines so you'll probably get a lot of different answers here about what we all do...

The warnings on the cayston package telling us to only use the altera for cayston scared me at first. It makes it out to seem that you will for sure be injured or possibly even die if you take your other meds in the altera. Do ya'll think that is just a ploy for them to make more money by making us buy a different nebulizer for each medication? That's what I'm thinking because the altera and the trio look the same to me.

Sara the questions you are raising were discussed in the thread you started about what the difference is between the trio and altera. It seems to come down to pari customizing the nebulizer for different meds. We don't know what separates the altera from the trio - there may be significant differences in the holes in the metal head, who knows. OR there may be no difference at all. I'm leaning towards some difference in the head but so far I can't find anything to prove it. The metal head is a very advanced piece of equipment and if there are any differences they would be microscopic and definitely not apparent to the naked eye.

Using the altera for other drugs is not going to kill you but you could end up getting a different dose than you are supposed to so I guess it is one of those "at your own risk" things. Hence the reason they are specifically compounding tobra for the trio (so you get the right dose).
