Using Altera for other meds

Sara the questions you are raising were discussed in the thread you started about what the difference is between the trio and altera. It seems to come down to pari customizing the nebulizer for different meds. We don't know what separates the altera from the trio - there may be significant differences in the holes in the metal head, who knows. OR there may be no difference at all. I'm leaning towards some difference in the head but so far I can't find anything to prove it. The metal head is a very advanced piece of equipment and if there are any differences they would be microscopic and definitely not apparent to the naked eye.

<br />Using the altera for other drugs is not going to kill you but you could end up getting a different dose than you are supposed to so I guess it is one of those "at your own risk" things. Hence the reason they are specifically compounding tobra for the trio (so you get the right dose).

Foundation Care Pharmacy where I get my TRIO and Altera and my meds told me this:

Altera should only be used for Cayston. The metal head has different size holes then on the Metal Head for the TRIO.

The TRIO you can use Albuterol, HTS, Pulmozyme, Colistin and reformulate TOBI. I personally only use Albut and Colistin in my TRIO cause the HTS and Pulmo clogged the head too much.

The TRIO and the Alterra both use the E-flow technology but are called different names.

That is the information I received.

The Altera and Trio have different sized holes, which means if you use the Altera for anything other than Cayston, you will be getting a different dose than the prescribed dose, and nobody knows if that is more or less or what the consequences of it are. I've also heard that if you use Cayston less than 3 times a day, you'll breed resistance to it in your lungs, but that is from a recent study that I'm not sure is published yet...
