havoc,

for some reason my doc said not to use petroleum based products, but I have used vaseline and vicks when I have a cold and my nose hurts and is chapped, I put it on before bed then i put my cannula on, im not sure why I was told not to use that type of lube, just water based...

anyways, i use it and dont seem to notice a problem... so it might be a good thing to try.

my doc said the same thing about not using vasoline or other products like it. I'm not sure why. My respiratory therapist also said using that stuff in the nose was a big no-no.

Hmm. Let me do some research and see if I can find a reason. I find that even in the medical community there are some die hard myths that seem to perpetuate.

Try taking and cutting off the nasal prongs to the cannula..This is stop alot of the irritation and will not affect how much oxygen you get...I do this with mine and I have checked with a pulse ox and there is no change in the oxygen levels

Ok, I found an answer on the petrolatum products. they can harbor bacteria and cause what's known as "lipid pneumonia." Essentially, some of the jelly gets inhaled into the lungs and the fats give the bacteria something to feed on. It also gunks up the cilia in the nares and prevents them from filtering out some of the dust and pollen we inhale.

There is a product that is billed as being safe called Boroleum. Here is the link:

Hope this helps.

When I was on o2 I put vaseline/patroleum jelly into my nose, it helped a lot. I have seen quite a few nurses put it in the nose of long-term users, abd also around the nose if irritation has developed from the use of the tubing. It dries out after a few hours, but it makes a difference if one keeps applying it.
