Using the feeding tube to hydrate

I just wanted to know if anyone here has ever used the feeding tube to keep a child hydrated while the were sick.

Marissa is terrible when it comes to drinking water anyway, but when she gets sick she starts sleeping. It is hard to get her to drink, and it occurred to me once when she was very ill with an ear infection that unlike my other kids I could keep water in her. She was quite confused about me hooking her up to a bag of water, but in no time she was acting better and feeling better. Her fever started to stay down. It was kind of funny because I had told her Grandma how ill she was, and she came over to visit 2 hours later, and Marissa was perky. But I have used the feeding bag every since to "water" her, with doctor approval, and I swear it has made a difference.

I just happened to notice all the posts about the kids being sick and lethargic, and I thought that maybe that might help. I don't know about your doctors, but mine never suggested doing that and was pleased that I had done it on my own. There have actually been several times since that they have told us to stop the NUTREN 2.0 and use water at night to help thin her mucous when she has had a cold.

We did the same thing too. When Josh was having all the fevers, he didn't want to eat or drink much. He was gettinghis calories at night, but nothing during the day for fluid. We'd hook him up to gatorade almost every day.

Funny, our doctor never suggested it.

ANother thing we've done is give Airborne thru the tube. Jesse doesn't like the bubbles so we tried it that way. Hey- whatever works!

Hey, the way I saw it was if I didn't get water into her, they would hook her up to an IV. Same principle, just a different route. She does get lethargic every time she stops drinking, and every time within 2 hours of being hooked up to water, she comes around.

Strange doctors don't suggest it...

I also slip a can of water in her tube with her food on the weekends to try to make up for the water she won't drink. Doctor liked that idea, too.

We have/do use it to hydrate Nathan at times as well. However, our doctor did recommend that we do that. Perhaps because we were going camping and were a little concerned because when Nathan gets over-heated, he gets fevers, so our doctor told us in the summertime if we thought he was a little or getting dehydrated to use his tube to re-hydrate or keep him hydrated with either salt water or gateraide w/salt added. Nathan hates water and it is impossible to get him to drink plain water so we often bolus water per our doctor. One of the benefits of having a tube! We also use it to bolus any liquid that he needs like medications that he does not like the taste of, another benefit!
