UTIs

Okay, so I rather often have this problem (once or twice a month). I'll get the beginning of a UTI. It's painful, it sucks. I feel like I have to pee all the time, so I go and try, and it's like... a tablespoon. I make it a point to clean a little bit more, pee a little bit more, drink extra fluids (to try and flush my system clean, sort of), and it's gone in a day or two. So I know it's not actually a UTI.

I actually have the same sort of problem with yeast. I'll get a little itchy, a little grosser. I'll start cleaning more, wearing only cotton panties, and it's gone a few days later. Again, not a real infection.

I swear, my lady parts are out to get me!!!!!

Anyways, this isn't about the yeast thing. I'm not worried about that right now.
But the UTI thing drives me nuts. I could always take Uristat, but I don't want to be buying more drugs than necessary, and I'd go through a pack every 2-3 months. I don't have a world of money lying around to buy all this extra stufffff.

So any ideas why? Or what I can do (minus spending money on OTC drugs) to make it not happen as often??

Help me!!!!! Hahahaha.

Drink Cranberry juice. Plain Cranberry or mixed with something like Apple or Grape. Sam's Club has a pretty good tasting Cranberry/Apple (or Crapple as I call it). Not as expensive as Ocean Spray or other name brands. I think it taste best with Apple, not as tart. I'm not big on juices because I get bored with them rather quickly, so I take AZO Cranberry. It is basically has the same benefits as drinking the juice. And always pee after sex. It helps cut down the risk of a UTI happening.

The National Kidney Foundation endorses Ocean Spray cranberry juice. That's one of the best brands to get since it's got far more juice content than some others out there.

Another thing that could help with the yeast is to try eating more yogurt. I used to get a lot of yeast infections. I was concerned that once I was on antibiotics more frequently that this would be an even bigger problem (yuck!)

I eat yogurt daily and try to make sure there are other cultured foods in my diet as well. (Cottage cheese is a favorite snack, and I like loads of sour cream on a baked potato. Food isn't always a complete solution, but it can help in some situations. It's worth a shot, at the very least.

Avoid over-cleaning yourself down there. Sometimes the stuff in those feminine wipes can really mess with the delicate balance. Since CFers already have issues with our secretions, I prefer to err on the side of caution. You're already doing the cotton panties thing, which is good.

I also keep a filled prescription of a yeast infection tablet (fluconozole) in the medicine cabinet. I know it works well for me, and in the long run it costs less to have that at my disposal instead of having to run to Walgreen's for monistat.

Another thought is that you & mike might be irritating it. Altho if its not an acutal infection I am not sure you can keep it going, but I know that sex seems to aggrivate things for me even if its not an actual infection. Just an thought.....

get your BF tested for yeast. guys are symptomless carriers and he may just be passing it back and forth to you.

if he's treated, then you're treated, it will probably reduce the # of incidences you have.

when was the last time you were tested for diabetes? more common yeast infections can also be a sign of diabetes (probably not, but if you haven't been tested for diabetes in a few years, maybe it's time to get checked).

Emily -- I agree with what everyone said so far. The other thing you might want to consider is keeping yourself very hydrated with water and cutting out caffeine (if you drink it). I've had minor UTI irritations and they always pop up when my caffeine intake is higher.

My girlfriend was always getting UTI's with her boyfriend. The doctor told her to drink cranberry juice - it wasn't a cure all to be all. Then she disclosed to her doctor that her husband has really large genitalia and her doctor instructed she take 1 cranberry pill everytime before having sex. She does this religiously and now they are married 6 years with a little girl and no more UTIs....but she never skips her cranberry pill - she keeps them bedside. If you decide to try this route let me know and I can ask her if there is a specific brand / dosage she recommends.
