So I'm in the middle of a 2 week course of cipro (750 mg twice a day) and inhaled TOBI twice a day. I've never been on TOBI but used cipro quite a bit. I've noticed some side effects and I don't know if its from one, the other, or both. First of all even if I do eat right before or right after taking the cipro I get naucious (it's better if I DO eat). I never noticed that with cipro before. The second thing is loose stools. Not really diareah because I don't feel like I have to go RIGHT NOW. This started as soon as I started the antibiotics. At first I just thought it was something I ate that didn't agree with me, but its been a week now and I haven't eaten anything unusual (except I started eating oatmeal every morning for the fiber, clearly it isn't working). Has anyone else had this problem, and if so what did you do about it???

My second question has nothing to do with that but I know this is probably the place to ask. When my boyfriend was born there was something wrong with his....uh....pluming, and he had to have surgery. Now he thinks he may not be able to have kids. I don't know exactly what was wrong or what they did to fix it (I'm not sure he even knows, he was only 3 months old). We are planning on getting married next summer and starting our family shortly there after. We both really want to have kids (even though we would adopt if we can't have our own we both really want at least one of our own, and I have always wanted to be pregnant). I don't know what I'll do if it turns out that we can't have kids. Of course it won't change the way I feel about him but I'll be really disappointed. So what I need to know is if anyone has heard of or expereienced anything similar and what you did about it? Also he told me that its really expensive just to get a sperm count, is that right? What does it cost, and does insurance cover it?

Cipro always makes my stools real loose. It could be that your doctor prescribed a higher dosage of cipro pills this time?
On the other thing, I can't help ya--sorry.

A semen analysis is actually covered by most insurance companies. It's the part after the results that they don't cover (treatment, surgeries and such). His regular doctor should be able to order it.

Your welcome. If the test results yield other than normal results, I can give you some guidance of where to start because as long as his body is producing normal levels of testosterone, FSH and LH, it is very reasonable to expect that he is producing sperm and there are ways to achieve a pregnancy with low sperm count or no sperm count in the ejaculate but normal hormone levels.

I have had your sympoms taking cipro. It wasn't bad though until I was taking cipro and bactrim together. I still had an appetite, but when I started eating anything, I couldn't stand to eat more than a few bites or I would get sick.

Oh the horrors of Cipro Poo. You are NOT alone. Hang in there and eat some cheese. That seems to help a little.

My husband a varieocele in one of his testicles. It is an enlarged vein that can lead to swelling, pain, and low sperm count. He had it since birth but wasn't diagnosed till he joined the Navy, and was medically discharged for it. We had no problem getting pregnant because it only involved one of the testicles. I don't know if this is what your boyfriend has but I do recommend getting it checked out. Good Luck

I have had a problem with loose stools and feeling like I am going to barf from Cipro. What has helped me tolerate it completely is:

1. I get the Generic Brand of Cipro
2. I take 500mg, three times a day
3. I ALWAYS take it with food

That seems to totally control the loose stools, no problems and the vomiting feeling.

I've never had an issue with vomiting, but yeah, the loose stools are a given for me anytime I'm on Cipro and/or practically any IV anitbiotic. I just deal with it. Doesn't bother me too much.

As for the second question, sorry but I know nothing about this sort of thing. Yay...I'm so helpful (NOT!!) ^_^;

About the diarrhea thing I always have my husband take acidophilus while he is on antiboitics. It replaces the good bacteria in your intestines. antibiotics kills good and bad bacteria sometimes causing diarrhea. just a suggestion. Also a sperm count test is only about 50$ without insurance. We did in vitro and had to do many test before hand.

I wonder if he could have had an undescended (sp?) testicle at birth? I've heard of that before which does require surgery and can sometimes leave the person with low or no sperm counts. Don't his parents know what was wrong with him?

My husband has CF and has a zero sperm count. Our insurance will not pay for any fertility treatments or drugs. It is believed that he produces sperm, but we can not afford to have the procedures to extract it and do IVF. If I were you, I'd just have him go have a semen analysis which is usually covered by insurance. Then you will know if he is sterile or not.

Good luck.

Thanks for all the replies! The day after I posted that I got a yeast infection too! Lovely, tomorrow I go back to clinic for a PFT and they like my numbers I'll ask if I can stop the antibiotics. This is seriously driving me crazy.

regarding plumbing on the boyfriend, most CF males, like myself, have "plumbing issues" but can still father children, just not through normal means. I live in Massachusetts where insurance companies are mandated to cover infertility issues. So, my wife and I went through In-vitro fertilization where they fertilize the eggs outside the womb and then implant it. It has been quite successful for us as we have 2 sets of twin boys. Incidentally, my wife was screened for the CF gene before we had children on our own. Had she been positive, we would have had kids with CF.

A final note of caution, if you and your husband end up going through IVF, and if they have to retrieve his sperm, as they did mine, make sure that he is heavily sedated. They did mine once with just a local and it was probably the most intense pain I have ever experienced- well worth it though.

I was once on CIPRO and I saw a phantasmagoric ambulance in my rear view mirror. It was RIGHT on my @$$ and I couldn't figure out why nobody else was moving over for it. So I jerked my steering wheel to move out of its way and landed in a huge ditch. It was totaly bogus.
