Very Thirsty

My 6 yr old (w/cf) is suddenly very thirsty all the time. I send her to school with a water bottle for the day, plus juice for the morning, drink at lunch and a drink in the afternoon. All are coming home empty which is unusual for her. She is obviously urinating more because of it. It started about 2-3 weeks ago and (not sure of relevance) yesterday she woke up with a sinus cold (no cough).
The past few days she has also been hungry which is highly unusual for her. A food psychologist told us a few months ago that she has a small appetite and now suddenly she is asking for food. I am attributing this to a possible growth spurt but the constant thirst is bothering me.
Anybody ever have this happen?

Food psychologist meaning we had trouble getting her to eat. They have a feeding clinic at her hospital. They deal with kids that have eating disorders. Maybe I used the wrong medical terminology but I don't know what else to call her

Isn't she young for CF related diabetes? I thought of it to because a friend of ours has juvenile diabetes but wouldn't there be other symptoms?

I would also be concerned about CF related diabetes. Some symptoms include frequent urination, constant thirst, weight lose, tiredness. I would still get her checked out anyway just in case.

The three signs of diabetes is

polyphagia.... (increased appetite)
polydypsia (increased thrist to try to dilute the high concentration of sugar in the blood)
polyuria (increased urine output)

She has all three signs I would without a doubt take her to the doctor..or use an at home diabetes tester.. It is important not to let it go and wait things out.. It can get very serious if he sugar gets to high.

Get her checked,

Jennifer

I agree. It doesn't hurt to be checked and find out she does not have CFRD than to not check and find out in a crisis situation.

I have CFRD. I found out when my blood sugar was over 600+.

do they not sweat profusly also? as a sign of diabetes?
I am getting tested next week for diabetes, my orthopeadic surgeon has suggested this, as a possible reason for me having damaged nerves in my arm and leg.

Funnily enough though I have been urinating quite alot recently especially at work

Getting a CFRD test is very smart, but I just thought I'd say... I drink a lot. Always have. So a CFRD test is definitely called for, but it's possible she's just getting really thirsty all the time now.

Thanks for the replies everyone. She is still pretty thirsty & hungry but her weight is stable. She has a clinic visit next week so I will mention it. I am not terribly worried but it seems odd. If, before her visit date, I get concerned I will definitely call the team.

my daughter has cf she is nearly 14 and always keeps well but last year after developing a thirst and peeing all the time she also used to 'feel funny' sometimes coming out of school she was tested for diabetes and has type 1 non related diabetes. it is rare to develope this but some cfers do develope cf related diabetes, you should get a glucose tolerence test done....good luck

what do you mean by funny? The thirst has subsided but she seems to be getting a lot of tummy pains. there are no other signs of malabsorption.

p.s. sorry for text but I am in a rush and don't have time to sign in

when ella used to come out of school some times she would feel
light headed, tummy cramps and pins and needles in her
lips(sometimes some of these symptoms sometimes all) she wanted to
get home as fast as possible.
even now if she goes abit 'low' she gets crampy in her tum.
a very bad cold and has gone to bed dosed up as there is a big
party at the boat club on friday. i have just spent the last 1/2
hour slavering her in fake tan, knowing full well that she will not
be well enough to go do i let her go and enjoy
herself? or insist she stays home! she is in 2nd year of senior
school and is only just starting to feel settled. if i let her go i
will be worried, if i say she cant go she will be cross/upset!!!

I would let her GO!!! Our kids go through so much at times we have to step back especially in the teen years and let go know all too well that it is most likely not the wisest medical decision but it is the wisest decision as a parent. At the end of the day the kids miss too many things in life.... so although some might think it's just a party...to her...it's another thing she can't do.... I would let her go and then when she gets home you can do a strict regime and pampering...my son is 14 and awaiting a double lung transplant...sometimes we have to standby while they live a little, it's hard enough just being a teen.

Hope she is feeling better...if not...Mom can pamper, nag, etc..to get her feeling better after the party.
