Vest machine and neb air compressor, broken?

How long do the the vest machines and air compressors for nebulizers usually last? We think the vest machine is dying as bf's vest is no longer puffing up very much. He says it doesn't feel likes its doing much of anything, and I noticed it doesn't feel firm at all like it used to. And add to that his nebulizer machine sounds like something is broken inside of it. He says the air comes out some then dies down then goes back up, and its really loud... Does anybody know how long these things are suppossed to last? I'm guessing we're probably gonna have to send back. Does anyone have experience with this? How long did it take to get new ones?

Our Pari sounded really bad right before self destructed. We usually go thru neb compressors about every 2 years; however, our last pari only lasted 6 months. Think we've had the Vios for 2 and our Devilbiss for 3, so keep waiting for them to fail. At least they're under warranty, so they can be replaced, although while Pari replaces the next day --- I have to have our local DME send in the Devilbiss and they check it out and it takes about 3 weeks to get a replacement.

As for the Vest, I seem to recall a similar issue with ladybug -- they replaced tubes, the vests a couple of times and finally the vest machine.

Thanks, I called hill-rom and they are sending out a new vest machine, we will have it tommorow, just have to put the old one in the box for ups to pick up. Our neb compressor is prob 6 years old, I called Pari and was told just to get a new rx for it and it could be picked up at walgreens, or from one of there online distributors! Happy that all of that went smoothly!!

When the vest is too tight it doesn't inflate right, or when air is leaking- and the leak can come from either the hoses being cracked, the connection between hose and vest being worn out, or the vest itself can be torn. I would have him measure his chest circumference and call customer service back and make sure he has the appropriate size, and if it's been a while, he likely needs a new vest garment and tubes to go along with the compressor he's already getting. For future reference~ We go a new nebulizer compressor every six months now, but she uses it an hour+ daily when healthy and 2+ hours a day when sick. We used to get longer than that out of them. The pari nebs are under warranty for 5yrs, so call your insurance or whoever provides durable medical equipment to have it replaced; once its been a certain number of years the dr will write a script. Keep an ear out for it getting progressively louder and rattly sounding and have it replaced at that point, don't wait for it to die completely or be putting out barely a wisp of air. The nebs require good psi to make small enough droplets to get deep into their lungs. I have no idea how the nebulizer compressor companies expect anyone to get 5 yrs out of the things. I know those with cf put them through a real workout, but still... I guess they count on an asthma patient using them for an albuterol treatment a few times a week or something.

His vest isn't more than 6 months old, and he hasn't grown any, he's 28 years old...No growth spurts anymore...he had ordered a medium vest and was told by his doctor that it was too big, so they sent him a small during the fall. He told me they sent hm new tubes with it then too, His machine is over 6 years old, he's never had it or the compressor for his nebs replaced. So hopefully the new one fixes the problem. The compressor for nebs is making a horrible rattling noise, and barely puffing out air, and getting really warm, so pretty sure thats the end of it. When I called Pari and told them the serial numbers I was told that one was made 10 years ago, <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0">

Yeah I wasn't sure how well he'd been fitted for the vest~ figured it was worth a try.

Wow, 10yrs. I bet he'll have the benefit of having neb treatments go faster now! I love that part when we get a new one. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Hey just wanted to say we use a Pari and we have had it go out twice in the last 2 years and they always send us a replacement for free, they even pay for us to ship the old one back. So if it goes out within the first couple of years definately try calling Pari again. I can see them not replacing after 6 years though. I just went to our family education day this weekend and our clinic is starting to have us bring our nebulizer and vest in once a year so they can check the output of the nebulizer and the fit of the vest in an attempt to bring lung function up. They said the nebulizers wear out and they should be putting out 30 psi's ( I think it's psi's, could be wrong about the terminology). You might ask if you can do the same at your clinic, sounds like a good idea to me. I'm sure every clinic has a way to test the output. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Nebs were defintely quicker when he was in the hospital, with the compressed oxygen thing they use...
@ jenny, I told maybe he should bring his Pari compressor when he went to the Dr at the end of the month, since we had no way to change the filter on it, and it seemed to not be working as well, but now that he is getting new ones I guess he won't have to this time around.

Bf got his new vest system and air compressorr for nebs yesterday. Wow what a difference with his vest! It is much quieter than the old one, and his vest filled up so tight, he was itching from not being used to it....And his voice was making that vibrating noise...All of this should have been signs we noticed a long time ago, telling us the other one wasn't working well...But we know now, and it's taken care of! Maybe his PFt's will go up more before his next appointment!

I have only had two machines really die in the past 15 years, other then that my nebulizer compressors usually last the full 7 year loop (I still have 4 that I have since moved on from). I had to replace my Vest machine a couple of years ago after it got banged up on a trip due to improper placement in the belly of a bus.
