Vest - pros and cons

I have read several articles that compare high frequency compression vests with manual CPT and all the articles I read concluded that hospitalization due to CF exacerbations for those using the vest was nearly a third of what those who had manual CPT.

I'll see if I can track some of the articles down, but you can probably find links to them on the Hill-Rom and Respirtech sites.

Okay so I just went looking

This article says that its not better, but not worse than CPT and can offer options in terms of getting a child to sit through it, giving the parent a break (especially with 2 CF kids, you will have one strong arm)...

<a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17419974?ordinalpos=3&itool=EntrezSystem2.PEntrez.Pubmed.Pubmed_ResultsPanel.Pubmed_RVDocSum
">http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pu...Panel.Pubmed_RVDocSum
</a>
This article discusses the increase of sputum output on patients using a vest over manual cpt.

<a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15635998?ordinalpos=13&itool=EntrezSystem2.PEntrez.Pubmed.Pubmed_ResultsPanel.Pubmed_RVDocSum
">http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pu...Panel.Pubmed_RVDocSum
</a>

My issues with any of the articles I read in this area is that their samples are very small and they have no longitudinal studies I can find. I understand why, the CF population is relatively small, so to find enough eligible participants to study this kind of thing would be tough, but statistically speaking its really hard to prove that these results are meaningful. For what its worth, I have to take all of this with a grain of salt.

Anyway, I'm revising my opinion in the post above....I think that the research mostly indicates that the real benefit of the vest lies in its ease and convenience, and that it does as well as (and possibly better by some arguments) manual CPT.
