Vest question

What is your biggest problem with the vest?

How long each day do you do it?
Do you use the nebulizer at the same time?
How long have you been using the vest?
what brand do you use?

ok, well i do the vest 20 min two times a day, morning and night, no I do not use the nebulizer, cause my respitory therapist said that while doing that your not getting all the med from the neb, while on the vest too, so he told me to do the neb first then the vest unless you have tobi then you do that very last after the vest. I have been using the vest for about 6 years say. not sure on the brand, didnt know that there were different brands.

I would say my biggest problem with the vest is transporting it.
when we go away my hubby has to clap me. he does a good job, he just hates doing it. I can't blame him.
it's so heavy. but I'll be applying for the new model soon, which is nicer.

my 2nd problem is using it in the first place. i hardly ever cough up mucus when i use it. i find cardio exercise more helpful in coughing up stuff, or plain old fashioned clapping. so, that's really my problem, becuase it does keep stuff loose.

I use mine twice a day...each time around 30 minutes. When I have colds I may do it 3 or 4 times a day. I do my nebulisor at the same time..I feel it works best for me. I do a lot of self taught breathing techniques so that i get the benefits of the neb and the vest (lots of deep breathes and forced coughs, etc).
I have been using it for 14 years...same machine (102 model of the ThAirapy). The only single piece of maintenance that it has ever required is that I needed to replace the tubes once..got a small rip in it. Other than that I just clean the filter about once every 2-3 months.
My PFT's before getting it were going down quite consistantly and rapidly in the years before getting it. The PFT's immediately following the acquisition of the vest showed huge improvements. Since then I have kept my FEV1 around 90-115%. I personally feel that I would not be here today if the Vest were never invented...or I wouldn't have the quality of life and the freedom which it provides me. The only downside is the size of mine..although I know the newer ones are smaller. But I have also heard they are less reliable (electronic/computer'ish issues from my understanding).
I'm a fan of mine if you couldn't tell! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I've been using vest for 5 years and also have the older 102 model (the huge one). I do nebs at the same time as the vest with the exception of Pulmozyme (directed to do this after vest to allow it to sit in my lungs). I have the size and bulkiness of this model and it is impossible to move it from room to room. I use the vest twice a day (am/pm) for 30 minutes each time. Then I follow this with the Acapella to help move the secretions up and out of my chest. I find that the Vest will break things up but will not move them up and out.

I dont know if this works for all insurances, but when I first got my vest (it was a rental until the got reimbursed what the cost of the unit was then I owned it) the vest company called & got metered reads to "justify" the need for it. So basically if the meter read that I wasnt using it enough, the insurance wouldnt want to pay. So if this was happening & I wanted a smaller version I would assume I wouldbe denied since I wasnt using the first version. I know if I was the insurance company I would be unlikey to approve a smaller version when the current version wasnt being used frequently.
