When Vic & I met yesterday, it breifly came up. Reece HATES doing the vest now a days & she said Garran was using the acapella. She said he brought up alot of junk. I was just wondering how some of you feel or if you have a preference on how it works vs. the vest.Im NOT saying Im gonna go out & get the acapella, just wondering! Thanks!

Warwick's perspective is that anything that involves patient effort and or accuracy variance is suspect.

The Vest works the same every time regardless of patient effort or ability to understand how it works.

My daughter has never used the vest, but she was diagnosed at 12 and they put her on the acapella from the start. Maybe that has to do with the age??? I think the acapella works very well, but my daughter doesn't have many lung problems. Some days it is hard to get her to be compliant though, as I'm sure it would be with any kid and long term treatment.

I do the Vest every a.m. and p.m. and do the Acapella mid morning and afternoon. I love it's convenience. Prior to it I was using the flutter and prior to that I was using AutoGenic Drainage which I still use when I can feel mucus on the move or if I'm wheezing. When I'm at baseline congestion Vest does just fine but if I'm congested or sick I up the use of the acapella because it seems to rattle stuff loose in me. I have to say though I am very aware (maybe more than others?) of my breathing and able to move secretions out more with the more control I have. Vest offers little control. That being said, I highly doubt a 4 year old could alter his exhale to 'work' out the junk. I think you should get one and have it as an option. Have Reece spit into a cup and directly compare the production from one method to the other. Would insurance cover it? If not, see if your clinic could 'sample' you one.

We, as in my daughters (and my nephew) use both the vest and acapella. My nephew, who is almost 16, feels that the acapella works at 70% as well as the vest for him. He has A LOT of lung issues! My daughters do the acapella in the morning, and the vest in the evening (on a normal basis). If there are signs of somthing starting, we up the vest treatments. What my girls don't like about the vest is that sometimes they get sweaty and itchy. I tend to notice this more of a problem when they are overly sleepy, so it can usually be 'fixed' by doing it a bit earlier before anyone is that tired. But I do notice that they cough up more junk with the acapella than they do the vest. I am so amazed that a little bit of plastic can do so much! It is nice that we can take it with us easily and can be used any where. It really has given us more flexibilty than before. The only complaint the girls have about the acapella is that it makes their mouths a little sore, from the vibration I guess.

The girls CF doctor said that there are no studies that say one is superior than the other. And anything that they will be compliant with is what works best. We like to have the variety. And when we go on vacation next month, the vest not be traveling with us! I will take the acapellas and do CPT by hand.

Oh, yeah, we got the acapellas at no cost through our CF clinic just in the past three months<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
