Vile tasting sputum....

I was wondering if any of you have had sputum that is so vile tasting (and a dark muddy green color)...it is hard to describe but it's really bitter & sweet at the same time, and leaves a horrible taste in my mouth. I am not sure I've had sputum this disgusting ever!! I have already had a sample sent off to the lab so I should know soon what bugger is behind this. Can any of you relate?? My husband also says that there is almost a "milky" odor coming from my lungs, whatever that may mean! I am colonized with stenotrophomonas (for 2 years now) and the sputum from that is usually just a salty kind of taste.

I'd say you either have a new strain of something and/or a really high bacterial count of whatever you have. Back whenever i'd have a really high count of whatever, I would notice how when i'd cough some stuff up, it would have a really pungent smell and taste. Now that I have a very low count of everything, my mucous is like nothing.

Also when i say strain of something, don't forget fungus or a weird yeast or something similar. It doesn't just have to be bacteria causing this.

Yes, I know what you are talking about. I get it but not all the time. It goes away without any additional treatments. I think is is mucus that has been sitting in our lungs for a while that just breaks loose. Not sure but that is my guess. I do a gree it is very nasty!

Whenever that happens to me I know it's the pseudomonas growing out of control. (will feel like a ball coming down from my sinuses into my throat -- AND has a funky taste and the colors you describe.)

When it happens I get in touch with my CF clinic and they either put me on Cipro or TOBI which clears it up. Happened to me last month and I'm currently doing TOBI.

Whenever that happens to me I know it's the pseudomonas growing out of control. (will feel like a ball coming down from my sinuses into my throat -- AND has a funky taste and the colors you describe.)

When my kids (or I) have sinus infections, we get really bad tasting sputum. Also, our breath is really yucky smelling. Are you sure its coming from your lungs?

This reminds me of a saying I once heard. I doubt due to the cosmic cruelty involved in most things, our sputum would never taste good anyways. I thought about that, and how things are in the universe, then I thought of this old quote "If sh*t was valuable, poor people wouldn't have a**holes". Heh.
