Vitamin Absorption

Like most CFers my vitamin levels are practically non-existent, despite the fact that I take them 2 or three times a day. The nutritionist at my clinic is baffled and had no helpful suggestions for how I can increase my serum concentrations of these vital elements.

Today I decided to try something new. I'm going to give it a month, and see if I can't bring up my levels. I would love to hear what you guys think of this plan:

4 times a day I'll take my vitamins with 3 enzymes and wash it down with a glass of whole milk. My hypothesis is that the vitamins will decide to "hitch a ride" with the fat from the milk as it gets absorbed with the aid of the enzymes.

In a month I'll take a lab slip with me and have blood work done.

I hope this works for you.

Our son has had a terrible time with his levels, but we discovered that giving his vitamins with enzymes (and spreading out some over the day) has helped.

I hadn't thought about the milk idea, but it sure can't hurt <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Just be sure not to take any supplements/vitamins within an hour of any antacids; the antacids counteract them.

You haven't said specifically what vitamins you are trying to increase. Some supplements interfere with each other. For example, I always make sure to space iron and calcium apart. Ideally, they should be at least 2 hours apart. I usually take one of them in the evening and one in the morning. I also won't take iron pills around the same time I have milk, yogurt, cheese, etc.

There are lots of other things that either need to be taken with the right stuff to absorb properly and/or need to be taken apart from certain things. If you are just taking a multi-vitamin with everything in it, this could be part of the problem.
