Vitamins

I was just wondering if any of you might know if you can still take vitamins that are expired? I have some Vitamin C that expired 2/06. I've got 3 bottles left and I hate to thrown my money away. From what I have read, you can still take them but their potency is not as good. Do any of you know if this is the case?? Thanks for any information you can offer.

Ya they should still be good, the only thing about vitamins and expirary dates is that the active components in them can deactivate, rendering them kinda useless....

Yep, that's what I've heard too. I have some that expired and I still take 'em. But, I reckon' if they're almost a year past the expiration, you could MAYBE take an extra one here or there. JMO though and what I would do. I assume after a year, they're pretty dull, so I'd just add an extra one every day or so. But, I guess I'd rather have too much vitamin that be shorting myself. Since there is no way to tell how much, if any, potency your vits have lost, you may want to ask a doc if its ok to take an extra one each day. Just something I'd do though. Either way, I don't thing there's a danger taking expired vits unless they get REALLY old or start looking funny! LOL....

It depends on which vitamin it is. If it's a multivitamin like ADEKs , you shouldn't take them if they're expired because of the way they're formulated. Enteric coated caplet style or gel-like vitamins last further beyond the expiration date. However, remember that expiration dates are there for a reason, and some things just aren't safe or beneficial after that date.

Take expired stuff at your own risk.

Thanks for the replies. I may just go ahead and talk to the nurse or the dietician at the clinic and see what they say. I just hate throwing them away ($$ down the toilet), but if need be, I guess I'll buy some new ones. Thanks!!
