Vomiting and "coughing out her mucus"

I am new to this site (thank you Lauren for referring me!) and should have joined years ago! Have a few questions and wanted some advice from other parents of kids with CF/adults with CF. SiSi is a 4 yo with CF who has been coughing up and spitting out her mucus for about 6 months now (not every time she coughs but often). About 3 weeks ago she started with a flu/stomach bug and was vomiting for a few days. Its been 3 weeks and she has continued to vomit occasionally (mostly while napping/sleeping/laying down). The MDs thought it was constipation and encouraged Karo syrup and suppositories. She had a BM, but still was doing it so then they thought it was her reflux (treated for as a kid but then they stopped the omeprazole when she was almost 2 yo). They started her on Zantac. We've been doing that for almost a week and is still throwing up after coughing. She has said things like "I did it, I spit out my mucus". She says that vomiting will "make her feel better" even though its prompted by coughing. The MDs now are saying its her allergies and its causing mucus via post nasal drip. We are giving nasal spray and claritan for allergies in an effort to dry her up but still have it in her mind that she needs to throw up to get the mucus out. Is this normal, a phase, etc? I feel like something is wrong but can't get the MDs to validate that I think something is wrong or just have a feeling that something is wrong. All thoughts and advice is welcome. Thank you in advance.

Vomiting and

My son would do a very similar thing. When he was about 4 he had it in his mind that he needed to throw up everytime he coughed. I can understand this because sometimes when I get to coughing really bad I feel like throwing up too. And Sometimes I do it involuntarily. He on the other hand had not only been coughing up the mucus but also swallowing it thus making it sit in his tummy until he coughed, it would come up and tickle his desire to vomit again. He has since stopped doing this and usually coughs and spits it out, so maybe it is just something that she has to grow out of. I don't know, but if nothing else works just try to explain it to her in words she understands and maybe that will help.

Hope you get things worked out!

Sometimes our coughing can be so hard, that we vomit.
You should not let her do any therapy like inhale,Vest, flutter, sports and so on after she ate. Wait 2 hours, so that most of the eaten things are no longer in the stomach, otherwise she might get not enough calories.

Andrea welcome! After things cool down a bit with Sierra's immediate needs you'll have to do an introductory post about you and Sierra's cf. Andrea is a dear friend of mine who's daughter has cf. We met very randomly...unCF related.

Many families check in every couple of days and will likely have some good feedback for you. Until then here are some good posts to read regarding similar situations.
I did a search for you using the search term 'vomiting.'

Vomiting and "coughing out her mucus

This happens to my 21 year old son still ! His problem a wad of mucus comes up while he is coughing and I think it hits his gag reflex in the back of his throat and then he gags and throws up -- he says he doesn't feel nauseated and doesn't try to make it happen (quite the opposite) but he can't help it.

Vomiting and "coughing out her mucus

Our granddaughter (at 8mos old) did this when she had a cold on top of her CF. She would just get coughing so hard that she'd thowup. Given what she was throwing up (a lot of clear/white mucous) a lot of her sinuses were also draining into her stomach.
