Vomiting

When I get very upset to the point where I start crying, it makes me cough until I gag myself into puking. I also sometimes throw up from gagging when brushing my teeth. Is this CF related, or is my gag reflex sensitive for some reason?

I'm not sure about the tooth brushing thing, but Piper has def coughed herself into vomitting many times, both when upset, and not upset.

The sphynchter (sp?) muscle is likely weakened at the end of your throat from years of coughing. You should try to huff whenever possible. Other things to look forward to along this same trend is herniated disks in lower back or neck, incontinence and the latest I've heard is a hernia in throat.

Coughing or gaging opens it up and stomach acid/contents can escape. It is most definitely cf related. The problem is that it could make you aspirate stomach acid in the middle of the night which could cause lung damage.

Best to mention it to doc. An upper endoscopy may be necessary. If a PPI can't control it then a nissen fundoplication (tightening of the muscle - think that's what the operation is called) may be necessary.
