Vomiting

My dd is 2.5 y/o and had this problem until recently. She was put on antiacid and it did get better although she still gags occasionally.

I also give her mostly mashed food, she would eat grown up food but not enough in terms of quantity, she just gets sick of chewing I guess.

One thing I noticed is that if I give her chunks in a sort of creamy texture (like pasta in a sauce) then she eats it fine.

My daughter vomited everyday until we started Prevacid. If she skips 2 days of it, the vomiting starts again. Thank goodness for prevacid!!

My son was diagnosed with CF at 8 wks old, and I completely understand what your going through with the constant vomiting thing. My son used to vomit so bad as an infant , I would burp him with my back towards the shower/tub because he would throw up his entire bottle, exorcist style. As he got older he developed a horrible gag reflux, so any cough, or texture, or taste of things would make him vomit. Needles to say I was a nervous wreck at restaurants, and avoided taking him to eat in public places as as much as possible ( it never turned out well, lol). There really isn't much you can do. Because of my sons constant vomiting, he lost a lot of weight, and yes I know exactly what you mean when you say that the value of calories and nutrition is shoved down your throat! Eventually my son had a G-Tube put in around age 3, so we were able to give him extra high calorie formulas without the problem of gagging and throwing it up. But on occasion, if he started to cough bad, it would come up anyway. He is now almost 10, and I can tell you that the gag reflux gets alot better as they get older, and can control it more. I'm not sure if this helped or not, but just hang in there, it will get better.

Thank you everybody for your suggestions and input! So frustrating! I hope it's easier to get her to consumer more calories as she ages. Here - eat a whole pizza and don't worry about the calories! Would've loved to do that as a teen! The CF saga continues....

My dd did the same thing... It was like she was fine until all of a sudden we gave her one too many bites and it all came back out. She started taking Prevacid over a year ago and it's a whole new world. She was very funny about textures also but I think it was more to do about the reflux then anything else. Different textures mixed with the acid and then she blew. (I hope I'm not being too graphic for anyone, but just assuming that as CF parents/caregivers/CF'ers we have just about seen it all)
We also give dd acidophillus for an extra boost in her cultures and immune system. You might see if this is something that might help. I notice more of a diference in her stool then throwing up... esp when she's on antibiotics, the acidophillus keeps her from having diarrhea with antibiotics.

Max has had similar problems. As a baby, he seemed to have a low gag reflex and would often throw up when eating - seemed like a daily occurrence. He would also wake up in the middle of the night, every week or so, and vomit out the contents of his tummy. During a clinic visit, we decided that it was probably reflux and after starting prevacid, the vomiting has become a rarity. I worry about calorie intake & that was a really stressful time. I hope that you figure out why Ellie is vomiting and get it resolved. We have enough to worry about already.
