wait time

I say this with "kid gloves". I am confused as to why people choose centers that don't have a "good" wait time. It is really hard to see some of the CFers suffering out there for months and months with no end in sight and others get transplanted within a couple of months at the bigger centers. Why do some of the centers have such great wait times, like 3 months, and others are 18 months? Why would you choose a center that doesn't have a good window of time? I don't mean to hurt anyone. I am just sad because I have a close friend who has been waiting since the summer and continues to get very ill. She is going to a center that is not great on the wait time. She was going to a center that was equal distance and is one of the top in the country and opted to get listed somewhere else. I just think it is too important to consider how long you have to wait.

skye,

there are many reasons for choosing the center that you chose.

the distance of the center from home-this may need to be an issue due to caretakers ability in gettingthere. it may be financial, some places are more expensive. the reputation of the center, what istheir survival rate? what isthe cf center like? so much goes into deciding. If a center has a short wait, it\may not mean the center is "top".

I moved 700 miles, my caretakers quittheir jobs, and the area was expensive. but i wanted the best surgeons working on me..,.that is what I got

sorry for bad tuypuing, i have a broken right shoulder

I chose my center based on several reasons NONE of which included wait time.

I wanted a center that was close to my town - and was lucky to have one in my town.

I wanted a place I trusted the docs and where I felt that they had good experience. Not just experience with transplant but in dealing with the other physicians and the surgeons.

I wanted a place I felt would give me the specialized care I would need and NOT prescribe to cookie cutter treatment.

To me choosing a mediocre center because they have a shorter wait time is ridiculous. It makes less sense to me to do that than to choose one that is a better center with a bit longer wait time.

My center - at the time I was listed had an average wait time of about 9 months. I waited nowhere near that - I only waited 6 weeks. On the same note though I know some people that waited over a year.

Alot doesn't just depend on the centers wait time but the need of the patient in comparison to the others in their listing AREA - not just at their center.

But yes that is why I chose to go to a center that had a wait time close to 1 year. I felt they were a better quality center than the other centers I had to choose from.

Also, certain insurance companies only approve certain centers. We had to jump through hoops to get Mike dual listed. And he still waited 2 years.
