love this thread. my initial thought was that i know i personally have difficulty eating when nervous or under stress, so there are only very specific foods that sound good to me at those sorts of times. if the same is true for any of your family, they may want to plan ahead and pack some snacks (trail mix, or whatever) that they know they'll be able to eat even if the vending machine/cafeteria food doesn't appeal to them. also maybe an ipod or some sort of music device preloaded with soothing songs? they could make a mix cd or playlist now to be ready. also maybe a journal so they can write/rant/vent if they start to feel overly stressed or worried or whatever.

When DS had to be lifeflighted to the NICU 250 miles from home, DH left right away and I followed the next morning after being released from the hospital to stop at the house to pick up some clothes and essentials. I forgot to pack any jeans for my husband. Poor guy had to wait over a week before my inlaws brought him some. Whoops! So don't forget pants <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Because DS was in the nicu and not a private room, we spent a lot of time in the waiting room. Every morning after rounds, we'd run down to the local coffee shop for a latte and a newspaper. Then we'd work on the crossword puzzles from the paper.

Magazines (I had the newest Harry Potter book, but was hard to concentrate). Breakfast bars were a good snack, my husband preferred poptarts. Handheld games -- Nintendo DS? When we were brave enough to venture out for an hour or two we picked up some good coffee to make in the waiting room machine and fresh fruit. Phone cards. Again I didn't like to venture too far away and didn't want to leave the waiting room to use my cell.
