Walking into running

Also wanted to add to everyone else - just to make sure you stretch before you start walking or running. Then from there do a five minute warm up of a walk - don't go full on like you normally would maybe walk at about half the pace just to get your muscles warmed up. I used to have really bad issues with calf cramps and shin splints and it just comes from tight deconditioned muscles mainly.

Also have a five minute cool down type thing ... the five minute warm up and cool down do NOT count as part of the exercise itself .. so if you normally walked 30 minutes without warming up or cooling down you would walk about 40 minutes but the 10 (5 before 5 after) would be at a casual half pace.

Otherwise I think like everyone has said to slowly add minute or two or three and so on is the way to go.

I tend to go too fast so I understand but I am going gradual this time 5k-10k and it is workign sooo much better. Any site that says run as far as you can stay away from I think we as CF'ers tend to 'suck it up' a bit much so if it says run as far as you feel is adequate then walk and repeat I will go WAY farther then I should etc In addition make SURE you stretch, I do a brisk walk, stretch a few major leg groups and a knee stretch since I have issues then I start jogging slowly, if I feel tight may do a few more stretches, THEN I run.

I just started jogging last fall and did my first 5K, it was great and a PHENOMENAL feeling of achievement. I dont know if that is what you are shooting for I just thought I woudl mention it, now I am buidling up for a 10k as you saw on my blog and wel you saw the results I am getting so I am VERY pleased. Its hard but worth it, keep up the good work!

ps dont forget to up the salt intake post running

Take it slow and increase your running speed once you are comfortable. The walk/run thing is good and that's how I started. I would run a block and walk a block until I built up to running 2 miles straigjt (two years ago). Now I am up to some higher miles 6-7 and am training for a 1/2 marathon. I started slow though and basically from scratch. You can do it!!

Wow, amazing replies. Thanks so much everyone that made suggestions. I guess I was trying to do it the right way (walk then run a tiny bit) but even the little bit I ran was too much! I'm going to cut the running distance in half to start, and try to follow that couch potato to 5k plan, it seems perfect for me. I did look up stuff about running, but I never found that til you guys mentioned it - I guess I'm good at internet searching for everyone but myself. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0"> It looks like I'll just have to go a bit slower than the average couch potato but I'm ok with that. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Yes, I do eventually want to be able to run a marathon someday, not sure how big of one... at this point I will be happy to run a mile without stopping - something I've never done in my life.
