As most of you know my granddaughter Grayson has CF. I have another granddaughter, Lyric, who is just 1yr old who eats constantly and isn't gaining weight. She also has had sinus problems and chest congestion for most of her life. She is going back to the doctor today for a chest xray. I spoke to my son and daughter-n-law about having her tested for CF and I don't think they are going to mention anything to the doctor about it. You see they are in denial about Grayson and I think they are scared. Do they test for that at birth? Do I have anything to be worried about? What would you do? Should I stay out of it? Geeze, I don't want to worry anyone but with Grayson I thought it might be a good idea for Lyric's doctor to know about. What do you think?

Lyric's doctor should definitely know about the family history of Cf. Most states have started doing newborn screens for CF, but not all. I think you can check yours at cff.org. I'm sorry they are in denial -- that is extremely worrisome, but a place most of us have been, if only for a moment or two.

I can't imagine how you feel right now.

Is this Grayson's sister or cousin?

If it is a sister, then the test should have been run when Grayson tested positive, IMHO. The symptoms you mention, combined with the family history are enought that a prudent Dr. would test to be sure.

If it is a cousin (which I think is correct as you have mentioned your son before), then it might be a bit less urgent, but I would personally push for it anyways. Again, there are possible symptoms, and a known close family link.

As for your son's denial, I can understand his reluctance to "bring" CF into his life, but it is not fair to Grayson, or the rest of the family. He needs to grow up a bit and just move on. Whether he gets his dau. tested is a personal decision; but I think you have a right to strongly suggest they at least tell the Dr about the possibility.

I hope you can find a way to get the answer....
