warming up IV meds

Josh is doing IV aztreonam and tobra at home. We are letting him do most of his doses by himself. He came home at 6:45 tonight and remembered his tobra dose was supposed to be at 5, so to hurry he took it out of the 'fridge and hooked up without warming it first.

Of course we tried to tell him to warm it up, but he said "it will make the pump run slower or it will make my body temp lower- either way I'm ok with it". hmm

What does happen if its not warmed up to room temp? I will call the pharmacist tomorrow, but I was curious.

I've done numerous doses without warming them up for the same reason and never had any problems with it

I've done this too with no problems. He's right...the IV will just run a lot slower and can slightly drop your body temp, depending on how cold it actually is.

yes, I have always been told the warming up is just for comfort reasons.

I think in older people it can be like a shock I heard from one home health nurse but otherwise I do them all the time from right out of the fridge if I forget to take it out beforehand.

Yes, I've done it quite a bit myself. I often do mine during the school day and forget to take it out of the fridge ahead of time. It just makes me a little cold.

I suppose it could be better than air conditioning in the summer. We always stick it in a cup of warm water to take the chill out. Alyssa still complains that it feels cold going in.
