Water...How much do you drink a day?

Many have told me that drinking water (not juices or sodas) is key to clearing my airways. I have found this to be true for th most part. How about you? And if so, how much do you drink?

On a good day I'll drink 6-9 liters of just water, on a bad day, I'll drink at least 2-3 liters. Again, how about you?

I was drinking 2-3 liters/day! Doc's told me to switch to Gatorade/Powerade for 2/3 of it.
I drink about 2 liters of water/ **ades a day.

why did the dr want you to switch? I drink alot of water probley 7-10 cups a day. It does help with mucus because my CF doc said our lungs must be hydrated.

when i was in israel i was off my pulmozyme for 3 weeks but i drank about 10-15 glasses of water a day. very little soda and juice. the water thinned the mucous and made it easy to clear out. since being home i have tried to continue with the water but i am failing and i am back to soda. the water definitely helped so i think you should all drink as much as you can. good luck

For those who don't know, 1 liter = 4.2 cups.

I am afraid there is no substitute for the benefits of straight water. Gatorade, Crystal Lite, Juice, etc. All but the Crystal Lite, are decent for electrolytes or nutrients, but neither provides the same benefits as water. Crystal Lite is probably the worst mentioned because it is full of additives, particularly Splenda/sucralose, which is very hard on the liver.

On another note, do you realize only a handful of studies have been performed on Splenda? And that it isn't really a variant on sugar but a variant on aspartame (http://www.shirleys-wellness-cafe.com/nutraswt.htm) (http://www.mercola.com/2005/feb/16/splenda_marketing.htm) (http://creativehealth.netfirms.com/poison/splenda_poison.shtml)

The dietician at my clinic told me that as long as it doesn't have caffeine I can count it toward my water intake. And if you drink lots it does help you cough up stuff since the lack of water in the mucus is what makes it thick. too bad I have to pee every five minutes though. Haha.

I live on fruit juice. I go through at least a gallon a day by myself, and I lost track of how many times a day I pee. I don't often drink water, because I don't want to pay for it, and during the school year I live in Boston. I adamently refuse to drink Boston tap water. On top of that, I really in general just don't like water. Especially when I can have juice instead. Haha. I'm like a 5-year-old. My favorite drinks aren't soda and beer, but apple juice, orange, grape, fruit punch, pineapple, cranberry-raspberry, etc etc. Yummmm. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0">

My dietician told me to drink juice or tea, too, but I think it's because I hate water. =-) Even bottled water, I can drink about one glass and then I don't feel like drinking anything else for the rest of the day. With juice, I don't have that problem, I think it's because of the taste, or something. Usually, though, I just drink milk, for the calories, but i've been working on drinking more juice, for hydration reasons, and because milk's gotten so expensive lately. (I used to drink a gallon a day, no way am I gonna afford to do that now! =-)

Sombody mentioned splenda. I've heard lots of bad stuff about it, too. Some doctors reccomend it, some doctors don't. =-) There is another substitute called stevia. It can't be grown in the US, so it's really expensive here, and it'll taste extremely nasty if you don't know how to use it right (i know from experience =-) Anyway, i understnd it's healthier than sugar, but I don't know about any medical evidence to back it up. (The plant was used as the origional sweetner, back before there was sugar... or somewhere where sugar didn't exist, one of the two =-)

Drinking lots of liquids are great, and for those who do, you should be applauded. However, too much juice is not good either, in so far as in drinking only fruit juices you are taking in quite a bit of sugar which can promote diabetes. A water/juice regimen is good, but the ratio of water to juice should be no less than 2:1, e.g., for every four glasses of water you should drink one glass of juice. If you want 4 glasses of juice, then you should be drinking about 8 glasses of water as well. The reason dieticians/doctors promote any juice without concern for consequence is that they typically don't think you will be drinking up ward of 10 glasses of juice a day. They also think that most of us/you would choose to drink nothing, if water was your only choice so they concede to suggesting juice. They would rather you drink juice than nothing, but also it is preferred that water be consumed above juice. I heard of a cf boy who at the age of 8 had never drinken water, because his doctor/dietician told the mother to give the boy juice and not water. This is so wrong. If a kid is healthy, sure they can get enough hydration from a glass of juice. But the level of systemic hydration we as CFers need requires a lot more comsumption of liquids. To make all that liquid exclusively juice or sugar water puts other systems in distress. Juice is not a problem, but too much juice is, and the only to be properly hydrated as a CFer requires that we drink plenty of water.
