We All Have H1N1

My Son with cf, my husband and I all have H1N1. It's been a really rough couple of days.My son came home from school on Thursday with a slight cough. It was still just a cough on Friday so I sent him to school, but when he came home Friday afternoon it had turned into a pretty ferocious cough and he had a slight fever which turned into 103.3 by Saturday morning. So we took him to the Ped and they did the rapid flu test which came back positive. In our state there is no other flu going around so a positive on the rapid flu test is positive for H1N1.There was discussion between the Peds office and the CF clinic of whether he needed to be admitted to the local Children's Hospital as a safeguard since he has multiple health issues, but they decided to keep him at home for a few hours and see how he was doing. When I went home I packed an emergency bag for the hospital just in case, because I was pretty sure that's where we were heading later that day.The Ped gave my son a rx for Tamiflu and I think that was the big difference between how it hit him and how it affected my husband and myself who didn't get the Tamiflu. At the point he was diagnosed my husband and I were only slightly coughing so I didn't even think to ask for an rx for Tamiflu for my husband and I.My son seemed to bounce back fairly quickly after he started the Tamiflu. He was very lethargic on Saturday, but his fever only lasted 2 days and now he's just left with a slight cough. I can't imagine what would have happened it he hadn't had the Tamiflu, because my husband and I have had a different experience with the flu.We started coughing a little bit on Saturday and then on Sunday we were coughing a lot. A deep down in your chest cough that is painful to the point that you will do anything not to have to cough again. I don't know if that's what a cfers cough feels like, but I hope not. We had fevers of 102-103 for three days. Absolutely no energy, I spent the majority of yesterday either on the couch thinking that I really should get up to get a glass of water or laying on the bathroom floor because the linoleum felt cool on my face<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">. A raging headache that wasn't helped by Tylenol. And I kept alternating between being very hot and having the chills to the point of shaking. At one point I thought that I should probably go to the ER to see if there was something they could do, but that would mean taking a shower and crawling out to my car, so I decided to tough it out at home. I know some people have been saying the flu isn't that big of a deal, but I've never reacted to the flu like this.I would highly recommend getting the Tamiflu for your cfer if they even start to look like they are getting the flu.

Ugh, hope you're feeling better soon! DH had the seasonal flu about 10 years ago and was miserable, sick of being sick, could hardly move... Glad to hear your son is feeling better!

I'm getting increasingly freaked out here about increased cases of flu-like illness in the area, news articles about healthy people getting it, how fast it strikes... No idea when the vaccine is going to reach our area.

Pam,

I am so sorry you got the flu. I think you have about a 48 hour window to get tamiflu so if you and your husband are in that window call and get a tamiflu script. I hope you have family/friends who may be able to help out. Hope you get well soon.
