I've looked at them when I've been at the store. I sometimes buy pediasure for when we travel if I can't find vanilla premade carnation instant breakfast. I didn't think they were as high in calories or fat, but could be mistaken.

We used Carnation Instant breakfast (powder) made with whole milk and cream instead of pediasure. We used to get it at Sam's, but they only carry chocolate and DS only wants "white" milk these days. Our doctor suggested CIB 'cuz it's much cheaper. And I really don't like the smell of pediasure, ensure, boost... Smells too vitaminy/mediciny.

i hear you on that! but he usd to just fill up on pediasure but when i bought the nutripals and the snack bars , he finally started eating reg food on a daily basis .... so this is ok the doc says... i put a tablespoon half and half to add the few cals it is missing though ! But it is a great thing only because it is not as filling to him which encourages him to feel hungry and eat!

Look out for the sugar content in these products. Most are packed with corn syrup and other sugars that are really hard on the body from the glycemic stand-point. Corn syrup is also linked to increased inflammation in the body.

Look for products which are sweetened by fruit juices or Agave nectar which tend to be lower on the glycemic index. Cliff bars http://www.clifbar.com/ are all organic, packed with protein and good fats as well as the sugar contect is from things like dates and cane juice which is a better source of sugar than corn syrup, especially from an inflammation standpoint. They also have the Zbar which are great. We often only give half at a time.

Also The Organic Food Bar company makes good ones with greens in them. Check this out http://www.vitaminshoppe.com/s..._detail.jsp?id=IZ-1004 No refined sugars in these either.

Just thought you'd like to know about these as an alternative or to add to the mix. Smoothies are a great way to add calories without the high sugar content like the OTC drinks.

Warmly,
Jody

Carnation instant breakfast is a GODSEND. Ry hated Boost, ensure, etc, because it was all so medicine-y. CIB was something he'd actually drink, and they make it in very high calorie too!
