i have been through the same situation several times only my little one isnt old enough to let me know and i wake up to the smell of sour pediasure...ick!! i can totally relate to "educating an ER doc", i panicked the first time it happened and went to the ER but have since learned that was a waste of time. heres my advice: 1st-sometimes the buttons are actually "defective" from the manufacturer...i had a situation a few months ago where i was changing buttons every other month and Kimberly-Clark Comp. said it was a defect. so i requested that my home health company send me a new mickey button kit each month with my feeding tube bags. usually insurance will pay for a new kit monthly. (have them chk with your insurance)...that way i always have an extra button or two hanging around or at grandmas house for overnight stays. 2nd--the hole for the button can start growing closed in a short amount of time, i cant believe they taped it up!!! i have had the problem where my daughters button must have ruptured early during the night and i didnt know it until morning and the mickey replacement wouldnt go in because it was growing closed and the button was a 16 french...i now also keep on hand 10, 12 and 14 french catheters with the extension hookup just in case this happens....(because as you know....the ER doesnt know what to do....) that way if the hole is growing shut i can put in the catheter that fits and kind of "stretch" the hole out by upping the catheter size daily until i am at a 16 and can put a button back in. .....hope this helps, unfortunatley i have had alot of experience with the button balloon "popping"!!! good luck! ricki

My doc told me that I needed to change my button (I will be using an AMT mini, but it apploes to Mickey too) everything 3 months. And when they ordered it they ordered me an extra set of everything JUST IN CASE. (and they are 2.5 hours away so if something did happen i would be in trouble).

What exactly is coming apart and leaking? This baffles me the only pieces on mine I notice that can come off easily are the piece that actually goes into my button (right now I have a BARD button) so I have found that I tape it to me. But the extention that connects to the bag has a very very tight fit and hasn't comes close to getting undone.

When Josh had the Bard button, the top flap broke off. My husband used the top of a connector tube to plug the hole. He cut the tube off and heated and crimped the raw end. It lasted two more months that way. Our GI doc said it was brilliant!.

Well on Friday I worked the phones again. I called Kimberly Clarke and they gave me their statewide rep. He gave me a few names of home health agencies and they wanted to run my insurance and get a prescription before they would tell me when they could get it in. The problem is resolved now. The pharmacy that ordered the origional button for his doctor out here ordered another for me and had it air shipped to his own house where I picked it up Saturday (FED EX does not come all the way out here air express on Saturdays). I have a spare coming from the company that sends me his feeding bags. I think the kicker from this expereince was the aggrivation from the doctor's office. She is a surgeon who put the button on the tube the first time. She ordered a second button just in case and put it in her office. She was on vacation last week and her office manager would not confirm she could find it and told me that even if she could, she would not be able to give it to me without approval from the doctor. The doc called me on a stopover on her way home from vacation Sunday and I told her what happened. I put the button in on Saturday. I am not sure who was more nervous, Parker or myself. It really was not a big deal. I truthfully would not have felt comfortable enough to even try to replace it without the feedback and comments that I have read on this site. I guess my personal tool kit is growing.
