thank you Lauren and Harriett for your advice...we will work on that stuff today!!!
Yes ours was actually covered by our state health aid. Harriett is right get the acapella choice, which can be taken apart and boiled. Our medical supply store messed up and got us the cheaper one and since we opened it up before realizing it was the wrong one, we are stuck
I checked on CF services pharmacy though, and I think without insurance they were quite inexpensive.

blessings,
missa

Marty has an acapella. The RT wanted him to use it for some extra ACT. He does great with it. We will do vest for 15 minutes and then some acapella and then 15 more minutes of vest. It works pretty well for him, especially when he is sick. We also do it without vest maybe in the middle of the day. It is a nice handy device to keep things moving. I really don't think it can be overused. The RT told us to try to do 7 big blows. Best of luck with it and I hope you like it!

I would appeal that. You had no way of knowing before seeing it that they didn't send you the right one, and now without being able to adequately clean it and allow the pieces to dry, it can be a breeding ground for germs on the inside. If this is made clear to them they might replace it for you, considering it was their error.

It's worth a try anyway before springing for a new one yourself- considering how expensive a disease CF is there is ALWAYS a better use for money we shouldn't have to spend, ya know??

Aidan does the acapella too and loves it! We paid $57 for it from CF services. I am not sure how effectively he is using it though so we still do the VEST each day too! Aidan is 6 as well.

Harriett....I attempted to appeal it...the problem is that this is a rural, very small medical supply store, the owner said he would have to eat the price and just left it at that. I am pretty big on getting what I want, but in a small town, you don't want to upset those that supply you with many of the things you find necessary in this CF life.
So....I am going to attempt to clean it...possibly by dunking it in hot boiling water and then soaking it in alcohol..and shaking the heck out of it to get the water out and see how I feel about my cleaning method after that. At least we know, we like the device...which makes me more willing to shell out the money if I am not satisfied with my ability to clean this one...

Appreciate all your feedback everyone!!!! Ethan's face just glowed, knowing that others liked his "commercial."

Aleksandra~ you are right, it's recommended to take it apart and clean & sterilize like the nebs. However, there are two Accapellas on the market although they look identical on the outside. The regular Accapella (cheaper) does not come apart and will melt if boiled; the Accapella Choice comes apart into 4 pieces and can be boiled. It also costs quite a bit more (but is still very reasonable, about $60 from some sources.)

There is an internal moving part (it kind of goes back and forth on a rocker on a seated groove and hinge); it's not just a hollow device with a smooth interior... I doubt any amount of shaking will sufficiently dry it. I would really worry about prolonged dampness inside resulting in problems.
