Here is Ethan's commercial...maybe I should put him in acting classes??

Would love some hints on how to use it best!!! He used it all day off and on. Can you overuse it??? If you don't do it perfectly right can it be harmful???

Hi Missa, I love it! The 2 nubs at the end of the device are to help it sit so you are technically using it upside down (twist it 180 degrees about the mask). I'm not sure it effects the use but it's worth a shot to use it correctly. He needs to work on slowing down this will extend the exhale which will mean he'll be rattling crap for longer. Also, a longer inhale will give him more time to recover. If he does what he is doing for more than about 5 minutes he'll end up with a headache from O2 deprevation. I've been there and it doesn't feel good. So if he says it gives him a headache this is why. Also, it's great to use while exercising. You could try this with a video in the home. Try googling kids exercise videos to see if there is something more kid focused than hot chick focused :)

Our clinic RT gave Emily an Acapella at her first visit (she was 7.) She was taught to take a slow deep breath in, hold for a couple seconds and then lonnnng exhalation (kind of like huffing.) Do multiple times in a row and then cough; repeat... The goal was for a 10min session twice a day. She couldn't manage the appropriate breathing technique for that long at one time, it was very tiring for her but we had no problem teaching her how.

I am not an expert of any kind, but I tend to doubt it can be 'harmful' in any way. If you don't breathe deeply enough into it all the time (i.e. casually playing with it at times), you may not get the full therapeutic benefit of it, but I don't think there's any way he can hurt himself with it ...I'd think he'd tire himself out first. ETA> just noticed what LouLou said about the rapid breathing and possible headache. I'm glad she made that point, because I wouldn't have thought of that.

I think the more tools our kids have, the better. Emily doesn't use hers much, but it's more because the long exhalations are a problem for her even now 2yrs later. I really, really LIKE the Acapella- the portability of it and the way it works from the inside out. If she could improve in her breathing technique I'd like to see her utilize this form of airway clearance more (it would be nice to have the option when the vest is simply not practical.) I am glad he has one and hope it works out well- if getting the vest and nebs done is hard for Emily on early days I can only imagine trying to get it all done x2!!

Ethan is sure a good looking young man. Adorable!! DD doesn't have the Acapella. Is this device covered by insurance? Sorry I don't have any advice.

Ours was covered.

If not, the Acapella Choice (this is the one you want, since it can be taken apart for cleaning and can be boiled; the regular less-expensive Acapella cannot) can be purchased through medical suppliers, amazon, etc.

Yes ours was actually covered by our state health aid. Harriett is right get the acapella choice, which can be taken apart and boiled. Our medical supply store messed up and got us the cheaper one and since we opened it up before realizing it was the wrong one, we are stuck <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0">
I checked on CF services pharmacy though, and I think without insurance they were quite inexpensive.
