Weaning off the bottle...

Graycie is 21 mos and only started taking the bottle less then a yr ago. She had bottle adversion and would not take anything by mouth for along time. We relied on her G-tube for most of her calories. Now she is taking most of her calories from her bottle filled with boost. She is a very bad eater and right now the bottle is helping her maintain her weight. Our family keeps a bottle at the ready anytime she wants one. With the other girls we were all so ready to wean them and get them on sippy cups, however, all that thinking has gone out the window with Graycie. I can't imagine what her weight would do without it. She does take a sippy cup now and then but does not consume enough calories that way. With all the other things we are concerned about, breaking her from the bottle right now isn't one of our concerns. We decided that we aren't going to let anyone pressure us into doing anything we aren't comfortable with at this time. I say go with your gut.

Thank you all for your wonderful advice! Sometimes it's so hard to balance the CF with the milestones and pressure from the pediatrician. My gut is to keep the bottles and introduce the sippy for one meal at a time until I feel like she drinks enough of it. We don't let her take her bottle to bed (bottle rot never crossed my mind, but the fact that whenever we aren't watching her with her bottle, she likes to pour it all over herself and surrounding objects, did, lol) so that's not an issue. Mommafirst, I have been using those same sippy cups you suggested and they have been the most successful (we have quite the collection).

Thanks Again All! I feel much better about this now.

Ugh! The docs are so worried about calories/fat, then they get on us about the bottle as well! I know the feeling!
I do think my daughter NEEDS to def get off her bottle (she is 5!) She will NOT drink her boost out of a cup <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif" border="0">( If we try to switch, she will completely stop drinking the boost and she is already on the lower end of the growth chart. It is SO hard to know what to do. I am interested in any other comments on this subject...we have tried everything, she just won't take the boost out of a cup. She has never drank anything else out of a bottle.
1 year old though, I would not push anything just yet...

Hi there,

Our son was not ready to give up his bottle at a year. I didn't stress over it too long. I gave him another six months, and then we gave up the bottle COLD TURKEY! I just tossed out every single bottle. But, before I threw out all the bottles...I found a sippy cup he liked! It took allot of different kinds to find one he liked.

My advise is too just relax let her have her a bottle and keep buying/trying sippy cups. Then when you think she and you are ready...MAKE the switch! It takes a couple weeks to get use to. However if she enjoys her drinks you may be surprised how well she might do if she doesn't have any other choice.

Wish you lots of luck! I know it's soooo hard.
