weight & FEV1

I can't imagine that weight is not figured into the expected amount of air that someone blows in that 1st second after a deep breath. Obviously someone that weighs 50lbs. would be different than someone who weighs 200 lbs. Those percentages are figured on people in a same age category and height. I would be surprised if weight is not in that mix. I am no "brainiac" though and I know there are much more well-informed people on this site and I have learned something if that is the case.

if you're heavier, it's more difficult for your body to function. especially if you're overweight.

but the way FEV1 %ages are figured is they take a bunch of healthy people with your height and gender, and make them do PFT's. that average becomes the 100% of predicted. weight isn't a factor.

being overweight has pretty poor consequences on health - and can increase insulin resistance so watch out for CFRD.

but there's no way weight will decrease FEV1 20%. i know you've had some lung issues going on so that's probably the decrease in FEV1.

when i go on to do my pfts. they always get my weight and height and put in into the computor. i think that it does have soemthing to do with pfts otherwise they wouldnt want my weight when i go in... just a thought!

You've also mentioned that this weight gain is over a 2 year spread. Have you experienced any severe exacerbations during that time where you've trained your body to breathe incorrectly? It may be worth it to reeavluate your breathing technique. Be sure to keep those shoulders down and relax <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
