I'm absolutely baffled by Connor's recent weight gain success and subsequent loss. I'm hoping someone might have an idea that can help.
Since Connor got his g-tube last year he's still had trouble gaining weight. Initially he gained 1-2 lbs a week, then would hit a plateau and then begin to lose. We didn't change anything having to do with the night time feeds....he was sick a lot so I thought that was it. Then I read on here about adding Viokase to the formula for the night feeds and talked to our doc about it. We started doing that after his Aug 13th appt (at the same time he was put on a week of Prednisone, 2 weeks of Cipro and finishing a course of Septra as well as Tobi for PA), as well as micromanaging all his treatments and pill taking (Connor doesn't like doing any of it, so would not inhale like he should and throw away meds rather than take them). He gained 10 pounds by Sept 10th, we were thrilled, and thought we'd found the key. Then he stopped gaining, and this last week he lost 1.5lbs. Nothing has changed- except maybe he's missing some enzymes with lunch at school. The only coincidence I can come up with is the end of the antibiotic treatments. Once he finished, he stopped gaining weight the first week, then the loss this week. Does anyone have any insight?? I am racking my brain trying to figure out what could be causing this pattern of gain, plateau then loss. He's not playing any sports (he usually does, but he broke his arm right before school started), and only has PE for an hour 2-3 times a week. He's eating normally, and doing 5 cans of Two Cal HN- 4 at night and 1 during the day.
