Weight Gain

I am 26 years old and have recently had a lot of trouble maintaining my weight. I have alwaysbeenpetite and havebeen in the 120lb range for as long as I can remember.I had 6 teeth pulled in October and attributed that to losing 4lbs. Well...it's now January and I am struggling to not only gain the weight back, but to also keep the weight I have! My appetite has not changed and I do the best I can to eat high calorie foods. I had braces put on in October as well and that has definitley put a damper on some of the foods that I used to be able to eat with no problem. I spend most of the time picking food out of my braces than eating it! Any suggestions on what I can do to gain this weight back? I checked my BMI and I'm at a normal weight but I also know that being at a very healthy weight for a CFer can mean a better lung function. Any suggestions on what I can do to gain my 4lbs back and then some?

Thanks!

Same boat here. Since infection in October I've been 5+ lbs under. Prior to this, i have weighed the same amount since high school with little variation. Now I'm at my junior high weight and I am eating past the feeling of fullness every day. I've been eating piles of cheese and dumping sour cream on my food for weeks.

hey Amber!
I will give you some tips... i struggle with the same issues.
The best way to add weight is by muscle mass. Go get yourself some 10-15lb weights and start flexing. You can learn basic exercises on the web. Leg workouts are the most effective. Try some squats or similar things.
Do you have diabetes? if you do make sure to check use your insulin. Now my secret trick: a nasty shake.
I use egg whites, oil, milk, protein shake, bananas and netlee quick (chocolat).i repeat, the only way i started looking normal and healthy is by lifting weights and being active.
Now i'm using 35lb for my basic routine and i feel better than ever before.

I agree! Weight gain shakes in addition to your normal eating habits is perfect (esp. for braces). Lifting weights will not only put on the muscle, but also stimulate appetite.

I had a tough year last year. 2 tune ups and multiple oral antibiotic rounds with most of the time feeling crappy all year. I am off to a better start this year, Praise GOD. But I too suffer from lack of weight gain. Lost alot of weight last year, can not get it back on. BUT my appetite is for the birds. I just am not hungry. I have incorporated high calorie Ensure Shake sand I do exercise that includes lifting weights so I hope to gain some mass. But I am having issue with lack of appetite....

Having no appetite sucks! I experience it when im off IVs for a long time. I just dont want to eat. I can stay without food for days and not feel hungry. And this situation scares me a lot. I have also notice that when i push myself to eat without wanting to, i dont seem to digest anything! No matter how many enzymes i take. Does anyone else experience this?

Besides that i hope you gain all the weight you need! Good luck!

My fiance is a R.D. (Registered Dietitian) and C.D.N (Certified Dietitian Nutritionist), she approved this stuff that I found:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000GZYBR2/ref=oh_o00_s00_i00_details

It's relatively cheap, tasty, and has good fats in it instead of just loads of saturated fat. It also has medium chain triglycerides which are easier for pancreatic insufficient patients to digest. Check it out. I'm 5'9" and 165 lbs. I put on about ten pounds using that as a post-workout shake. Exercise will do more than anything to make you feel healthy. I promise you that.

I had good luck with Benecalorie (also by nestle)
http://www.amazon.com/Benecalorie-Resource-Calorically-Dense-Supplement/dp/B004MCDJM8/ref=sr_1_4?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1328714044&sr=1-4

It's expensive but I think it was worth every penny. I was never one for protein shakes, or weight gain shakes. blah. AND I hated the fact that when I wasn't very hungry if I had a scandishake it would basically replace dinner so I wasn't truly getting extra calories.

I love this stuff. I took 2 per day and within a week I had gained about 3 lbs! These also have more protein than scandishakes do, not to mention its only 1.5 oz. I would mix mine in about 6 oz of chocolate milk and drink it with dinner. These wouldn't fill me up like the shakes would and the consistency in whole milk is pretty unnoticeable. (Although it separates pretty easily so I would drink mine with a straw and just give it a swirl before sipping on it. I tried it in yogurt once too and that seemed to work a lot better than milk, but milk is easier to drink lol)

I gained a lot more weight when I started exercising though. (I got a dog and started walking a few times daily). I'm now at the highest weight I've been for a few years. Muscle weighs a lot more than fat and lasts a lot longer too. If you're sick you recover quickly when you have more muscle. I think its something commonly overlooked.

I also find that menu planning is a huge help when trying to gain weight. I sit down and plan basically every meal right down to drinks, for the week. When I'm not feeling well the last thing I want to do is think about what I'm going to eat. So I take about an hour, and for the rest of the week I'm set! I make sure I have a lot of easy preparation meals in the menu line-up.

Good luck!
