Weight Gain

However I should not be s oblivious but to answer the OP's question and I apologize, if you want to gain weight, follow these simple rules:
<br>
<br>1g Protein/ Per pound you weight.
<br>
<br>MTC's (Coconut oil, palm kernel oil) MTC's are absorbed by the liver and do not need enzymes to be consumed, making them ideal for people with CF. If you like butter, consider making MCT butter, take regular salted butter leave it at room temp with coconut oil mix together and use as a spread, good way to get easy extra calories. Make sure to put back in the fridge.
<br>
<br>Complex Carbs - Whole grain pasta's, Whole grain bread, Sweet potato's. All excellent, because they are absorbed slower you are able to regular blood sugar and make better use of what you are eating. You still do need to have some Simple carbs, first thing in the morning so that you can feed your brain early. The human brain uses sugar plain and simple. However in diets with low amounts of sugar, the body is smart, and starts to produce keytones to feed the brain, so when in doubt let the body do it's own thing.
<br>
<br>EAA's (Essential Amino Acid's) for us this translates to Albumin production in the body which we so desperately need as people with CF. Albumin is a major building block of our body as almost all muscles need amino acid's to build. This will also increase protein synthesis in the body to repair your body while you sleep.
<br><br>EDIT: EAA's This is your meat! Red meat has very clean Albumin, if you have high blood sugar problems, look for GRASS fed beef as opposed to grain fed. It's more expensive but better handled by the body.<br>
<br>That brings me to another point, SLEEP is crucial to anyone, but so much so us. The body repairs its self while we sleep and makes it supper important. Protein before bed and first thing in the morning!
<br>
<br>EFA's (Essential Fatty Acid's) Omega's concentrate mainly on Omega 3. Most American's have an over abundance of Omega 6 from all the trap we eat! The body can make Omega 6 and Omega 9 from Omega 3 if it needs more. The balance of Omega 3 to Omega 6 should be about 4:2.5 (Omega3/Omega6). Sources of Omega 3's are your salmon, Flex seeds, some beans, most fish in general, and walnuts, as well as Olive oil.
<br>
<br>Also another comment on ALA. ALA also helps regulate free radicals in the body!
<br>
<br>
<br>
<br>
<br>
<br>

god, i hate it when snobby cfers go on about how terrible it is to eat crap food, and then they fail to provide any healthy solutions! gimme a break! it's not doing anyone a favor to tell us what we already know - that crap food is CRAP!
but back to the problem at hand - weight gain. i have been supplementing my diet with scandi-shakes for months now, but it gets old with the same flavor all the time (for some reason they never seem to have different flavors when i ask!). I love avocados (guacamole mmmm <3 <3 <3) and cheese and nuts, but as far as constructing a full, healthy diet that will help me gain weight; i'm struggling.
i plan to take a cooking class in the coming months, 'cause it doesn't help one bit that i suck at cooking!
there's a website that i've only checked out once, shame on me, but here it is for anyone interested: http://www.chef4cf.com/
good luck <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

DS drinks smoothies (frozen fruit, banana, apple juice, yogurt, protein powder, flaxseed oil) that are nutritious, tasty and full of fat. Flaxseed oil is a must - there are 11g of fat in 1 tablespoon. Peanut butter is another tasty fatty option as well.

I would like to chime in... I am a mom of a 7 y/o cfer and I completely agree with Incomudrox and the others that think that filling up our young with junk food is just a diaster waiting to happen. CF or not- diabetes and other horrible auto immune diseases are on the rise in our kids. In my personal case, not only do I have a child with CF but one with Ulcerative Colitis and one with Asthma and possible celiac disease. So for me finding ways to help my family build their immune sytem has been top priority!

I am fortunate to have found a function medical pediatrician that has the confirmed my gut feeling that something was wrong with the way we were going about my daughters health by adding Mcdonalds etc. to her diet. We have had her tested by Quantitative Refux Analysis (QRA testing) that also tells us excatly what her body needs not the "as directed" norm that most doctors go by.

I have always been heathy and "living green". We have 3 acres- grow our own vegetables and have 3 beehives. I have just started giving my daughter bee pollen due to the benefits of the multi B vitamins, minerals, protiens, amino acids, carbrohydrates ets. that helps her immune system. She begs for it BTW.

I have also had my daughter tested for high IGe blood levels of foods that are bringing her immune system down. Of those are corn, peanuts and wheat. I am not saying that we still do not have problems...she is not gaining weight and she has had a rough year with PA. We may end up with a gtube this year but if that will help her with high protien extra ponds it maybe what she needs to get over the hump. The process of taking something bad out of your immune sytem is long and slow. We have ALSO added cell food, trace minerals, amino acids, MCT, omega 3,6,9, probiotics, gluithione, and still give her (2) vitamax tablets along with her typical Cf meds. She has not caught a cold, been congested or had any other non typical CF issues Which shows me that all of this is working. Again, this journey is a long and a slow one but I do see a difference in her energy levels, dark circles under eyes and coloring in her face. I know that she can overall feel better despite CF. My hope is to teach her that she can feel good and make the most out of her health situation by taking control. Here is an article about a bee business I started because I wanted to find ways to boost her and my families immune system. **I AM NOT SPAMMING** I just thought my story fits along the ideas of nutrition and cf. - IT JUST CONFIRMS WHAT I AM SAYING.

My 10 year old does not like junk food very much. She really doesn't like sweet stuff. She leans more towards healthy foods. She LOVES salads. I try to make sure to pack as many calories as possible into each one. Eggs, cheese, turkey, ham, bacon, croutons and of course ranch dressing. We have been more successful with many smaller meals a day rather than larger meals. She eats breakfast or drinks pediasure, she has a morning snack at school, usually cheese sticks, pepperoni or Danimals smoothie. She eats a "snack" after school, usually a beefy 5 layer burrito from Taco Bell <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">. She eats an OK dinner and another snack as she is getting ready for bed. Doing this, she has managed to gain about 25 lbs in the last 2 years. She is still in the yellow, but at least the feeding tube has not been mentioned lately. This may have already be suggested, but have you tried fruit smothies? Healthy, nutritious and you can had things like malted milk and whole milk to add calories. Good luck!!!!

<P>What about adding scandi to pudding or fruit smoothies? It will at least let you vary the flavor. </P>

I agree with a healthy high calorie diet but I have found that it's really difficult to put on weight with food alone. I try to lift heavy weights, especially legs. Squats, lounges, hamstring curls, etc. Also exercising your larger muscle groups requires more O2, building better lung function and better O2 efficiency. Muscle weighs more than fat and much easier to build, just takes some discomfort and effort. Healthier too!!! Everyone has to start somewhere so don't be discouraged at first. Start with light weight to gage your exercise tolerance and build from there. I promise it will make you feel better all the way around!!!
