I had my glucose test last week and they took an additional 8 vials of blood for some CF center requested tests.

I got a call from the CF doctor herself today saying that they're kind of concerned with some of my labs.

1. I'm anemic - my hemoglobin was at a 10 g/dl - last time they checked (probably a year ago) it was at 14. Yet when I checked looked up pregnancy and hemoglobin I found a statistic that says in the 2nd trimester a woman is anemic when the hemoglobin level is less than 10.5 g/dl. And in the 3rd trimester, a woman is anemic when the hemoglobin is less than 10 g/dl. The way the doctor said it though was that I've lost a third of my oxygen carrying capacity and that is why my asthma must be so unstable (ie I'm terribly anemic). But I'm not totally buying it because I'm just barely anemic for a pregnant woman entering her 3rd trimester.

I started taking Floradix last week since the OB nurse called to tell me about the low hemoglobin too.

2. My vit A level was quite low. I occasionally took a Vit A+D but stopped taking it and started taking a D supplement alone because I was worried about too much A during pregnancy. So I guess I need to start taking some A again.

3. My Albumin level was low. I *think* she said it was at a 3 and low end of normal is 3.6. So she said I'm not eating enough protein. I've been told this before and thought I was. I told her I need a target for how much protein I need to be eating so I think she's going to have the dietitian call me back. I don't know if I can get enough protein from my diet at this point since it is getting harder to eat at meals so I will have to get some protein shakes or something - anyone have a recommendation?

All in all I still don't like my CF doc too much.... she just has no bedside manner and can be kinda rude. The tone of the conversation wasn't all that nice. But I will do my best to remedy the bad lab report and get myself fixed up.

I've been battling anemia since November. I just found out about Floradix, but I'm trying Slow FE pills right now for 2 months, because it is available at Wal Mart and it's cheaper. Did they test your ferritin level too? Mine is 10 and its' supposed to be between 50 and 200. I'm not exactly sure what the difference in testing hemoglobin vs ferritin is though.

Sounds like you know what you need to do to boost the vit A.

I used my husbands weight lifting Whey Protein Powder everyday when I was pregnant. I think one scoop had 25 grams of protein in it. I mixed mine with my morning scandishake. But I believe my husband just mixed the powder with water. It was vanilla flavor. It came in this huge canister, but I'm not sure of the brand b/c we don't use it anymore. Anyway it was really good tasting with my shake. You could probably just mix it with some milk too.

Caroline,

Sorry your labs were a little off. I was also worried about having too much vitamin A in pregnancy. I cut down one of my ADEK vitamins and replaced it with a prenatal vitamin. My most recent vitamins showed my vitamin D was too low so I've been taking extra. Anemia is very common in pregnancy. Hopefully it will improve after the baby's born. Get some more protein in! Everyone is always hounding me to eat more protein. Hopefully your dietician can give you some good pointers. Good luck with getting your labs back to normal <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
