I'm sorry about your bloodwork, Caroline. I really only have one bit of advice for you. Slow FE works great for me for my anemia! I have been taking one a day for the past 14 years now. I tried about 5-6 different brands of Iron, and Slow FE was the best. Also, it's the only one that doesn't cause me to get an upset stomach. Iron is known to cause that - BEWARE! Good Luck!

Jenny,

I just found out about Slow FE. Can I ask how many pills of Slow FE you take each day? I take just 1. I'm giving it a shot. However the stuff Caroline is taking is much better absorbed in the system than Slow FE. It's iron gluconate, not ferrous sulfate, like Slow FE and other Iron pills. I found some Floradix online:

<a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.wholesalesupplementstore.com/flora-floradix.html
">http://www.wholesalesupplement...m/flora-floradix.html
</a>
It's a 25 day supply for $25.50 plus shipping. I'm not sure if this is sold in retail stores. Caroline, where do you buy your Floradix? The reason I'm testing out Slow FE at the moment is because it only costs me $8/month. But we'll see if it brings results! I just started it 10 days ago. I have labs in about 6.5 weeks to check my levels again.

I just take 1 a day, and my iron levels are fine each year. It was suggested to me 14 years ago and still works like a charm. It is also so inexpensive that I really don't have intentions of making changes.

I also would be so uneasy about changing my iron supplement because I use to get so sick to my stomach with just about any other supplement. It was really bad. My stomach has always been loosy.

Tara - I bought it on Vitacost.com That is where I buy most of my vitamins/supplements. They tend to be cheaper there than anywhere else.

Here is the link to the Floradix: <a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.vitacost.com/Flora-Floradix-Iron-Herbs-17-Fluid-Ounce
">http://www.vitacost.com/Flora-...-Herbs-17-Fluid-Ounce
</a>
It is $24.63 for 50 servings (17 oz bottle). Vitacost has flat rate $5 shipping so I just buy a few things at a time (today I just purchased some protein powder and some probiotics). I started buying my MIL's vitamins on Vitacost for her because they were so much cheaper than in the store. I also used this code for 8% off: aetna8

Jenny - I have heard of Slo FE but I have heard nothing but great things about Flordix and it is also what my midwife recommends. It is very gentle and highly absorbable.

Here is a chart comparing the absorbability of the different iron compounds:

<img src="http://www.florahealth.com/NR/rdonlyres/77596FB5-9D70-11D5-B76F-00508B8B9968/2755/IronChart.jpg">

And here is what the flora website says about it:
Floradix boasts the highest possible iron absorption rate: up to 25% (4) is absorbed for potential utilization (that's more than twice the absorption of other iron supplements or even dietary iron) due to its liquid format as well as the organically bound iron gluconate and co-factors. Better absorption means you don't need to take as much. In a recent study, it was found that due to the high absorption rate of Floradix, very little unabsorbed iron enters into the intestinal tract and therefore constipation is unlikely to occur (5)
