The two things I would question are:

antihistimine (generally a no-no with cf because it dries mucus that we want to keep thin so we can move it out of our lungs)

high dose ibuprofen (I thought this was tested years ago not be as effective as azithromycin...not to mention the side effects. I could be wrong but I don't remember people saying on here that they are still doing it)

This is incorrect.

<b>Only some anti-histamines have anti-cholinergic properties </b> Benadryl and Zyrtec (much less than Benadryl) contain these properties.

Allegra and Claritin do not have drying or anti-cholinergic affects.

Singulair does NOT do the same thing as an anti-histamine. Singulair is an leukotriene agonist (leukotrienes are responsible for about 30% of the allergy cascade.... histamines, on the other hand are responsible for 70% of the allergic cascade).

Many CFers take both Singulair and an anti-histamine as allergies can have a tremendous effect on lung function.

So bottomline - make sure you're on an anti-histamine that is Allegra (2x as effective as Claritin) or Claritin.

If you have sinus issues I would recommend an intranasal corticosteroid (nasal spray) that doesn't contain alcohol (nose bleeds, drying, headache) such as Nasacort AQ.

i was going to say, i didn't think the high dose ibuprophen was standard practice anymore. i could be wrong. and i certainly don't know if there may be differences between adults and children with this.

Hi, Thanks so much for all of the responses!

I was diagnosed after my chronic asthma & pneumonia wouldn't clear up & then the + psuedomonas culture- + weird ex-rays put the picture together- clinically. We also had borderline ssweat tests & I had been put on a high salt diet a year ago by my Cardiologist. We are still waiting for my mutations but my daughters came back (hers are very confusing) - we are waiting for mine... It has taken since Dec. to get the diagnosis confirmed and along with it has come an unpredictable sense of peace. The 'waiting' is over now we can start dilligent treatment and get on with our lives.

The question about the decongestant is a good one..I think I'll bring that up at our next appointment.

I would ask about the side effects of the high dose ibuprofen. I'm with the other's who posted... depending on her age and the long term effects.... something to look into. I asked about it a long time ago and the doctor said yes they saw positive results, but he didn't feel it was worth the increase risk for damage because of the high dose.
