My son with CF is 3 and gets the wet cough after eating/drinking fairy often. He's got it right now. Usually it sounds like drainage going down rather than like anything from lungs coming up. We've talked about it quite a bit with his CF doctors because it makes us nervous. No definitive conclusion has been reached, but here are some of the things that have been said. The whole time, though, he's never had anything but a "clear" report when the Dr. listens to his lungs or xrays them.
1. Milk encourages mucus - my son's "milk" is a mixture of whole fat milk, whole fat yogurt smoothie, and half/half so it's a good bet that this is having an effect
2. Allergies - we live in an extremely allergen-prone house and neighborhood (a dozen mature oaks in the front & backyards within 50 feet of the house, for example) and there is a definite increase in this symptom when the trees are going crazy.
3. Tobi-related - tobi is an irritant and there tends to be more coughing when he's on tobi.
4. Normal colds - normal tots pretty much are always getting a cold, having a cold, or recovering from a cold and we try not to fret too much about when he's just having a normal cold.
5. Reflux - my son had terrible reflux until after his 1st birthday and even now can have it happen if he's too active after eating. The Dr. said just the other day that the reflux could also be a contributing factor.
