What are some non-harsh cleaning products?

I myself don't have CF but hubby does and of course that means helping make sure things are clean around the house. Anyway, I have noticed that anytime after I clean the bathroom I get sick for days. It makes it hard to manage keeping things clean and safe for my hubby when I can't even clean it myself. So I was wondering if any of you may know of some products that aren't as harsh with chemicals but still work well? Even if it is a homemade solution, I would be willing to try that as well.

Hello there,

First of all, what type of cleaning products are you using? Brand wise and are they liquid? Maybe you are allergic to one of specific substances in the product. Just a thought.

My suggestion (which is what we use for our family bathroom) is Comet with Bleach. It's a disinfectant cleanser. It's NOT liquid. It's blue powder. Cleanser powder has less of a strong chemical cleaning smell to it. It says right on the product that it kills 99% of germs, cleans tough stains and is scratch free. All you need is a bit of water to mix with it and a cleaning sponge.

There are lots of more natural based products available both off the shelf at stores or things you can mix at home. If you prefer to buy, iherb.com has some great products and good prices. If you want to give things a go that you already might have at home there are lots of products that wont leave you or hubby wheezing. I use either white vinegar or metholated spirits as a base for spray and wipe style solutions. Vinegar is great for soaking an empty dishwasher to kill the nastys and metho cleans windows, stone benches and mirrors well. Adding a couple of caps of eucolyptus or tea tree oil will be great for killing germs and a nice fresh smell. Adding clove oil to a small amount of metho works a treat on moulds and unlike bleach, if you leave it to soak will kill the spores. Bicarb soda is great for scrubbing sinks and taps etc, then wipe with eucolyptas to ensure the germs are gone.

It might sound all a bit alternative, i believe using strong chemicals really does add to the inflamation in my lungs. Of course sometime chemicals are unavoidable so if i must use them i use a mask and gloves.

Best of luck! Happy Cleaning!

Aha my kind of topic!
2 years ago I switched to no fume and/or all natural cleaning products. I use method and 7th generation-you can find them at target, and some grocery stores. I'm super sensitive (sneezing attacks, watery eyes, asthma attacks) to all smells and fumes and there isn't a single item in either product line that bothers me.
Since the green market has exploded, method has come out now with anti bacterial products that kill 99% of germs but maintain their no fume, or all natural-ness. I use those for my kitchen counters.
I like 7th generation for bathroom products-they now have ones that clean 99% of bacteria.
For floors I use 3 cups of vinegar diluted in 1 gallon of water. Nothing cleans better. I personally love the smell. For glass I use vinger diluted in a spray bottle.
For laundry I use Mrs. Meyers. Hands down best stain fighting, most all natural products, pleasant smell.
(hope I'm not beginning to sound too martha stewartish...eww)
1/2 vinegar and 1/2 water will clean up bathrooms and kitchens super well. Stains and dried on spots that need scrubbing... add a touch of baking soda to the spot and then spray on the water/vinegar mixture. It will bubble and fizz AND clean it well.

Vinegar and water on floors.

Deep dusting once a month-- a few tablespoons olive oil and a few tablespoons vinegar. Put a small amount on a cloth and dust. Buff the remainder of the oil off the wood and you should be left with a great shine. This also works on hardwood floors.

The vinegar leaves a temporary pickle smell but it evaporates within a few minutes.

I use the vinegar/water mixture on mirrors and chrome. Leaves a lot of shine.

To clean a microwave... cut a lemon in two and add it to a medium bowl of water. Cook the lemon in the microwave for 2 minutes. Let it set in the microwave for about 5-10 minutes. This will soften the "baked on gunk" in your microwave and you just need to wipe it clean... little to no scrubbing and no fumes! I usually run the lemons down my garbage disposal after I am done and it removes any "foody" smell from my drain.

Wow oh wow, thank you all. You are wonderful.
Well, I do find that a lot of time that bleach seems to be what makes my eyes water, gets the coughing started, and closed throat feel. So maybe that is it. I do use spray liquids such as Scrub Free or something along those lines. Right now we live with the in laws so I usually just clean with what is here but I just can't do that anymore because I can't get much done getting sick afterwards. Thats why I came here looking for an alternative and boy you all really helped. I really think vinegar it shall be for a good part of it. I will also look for the products you mentioned as well mamaScarlett and no, you in no way sound Martha Stewartish. Lol. And thanks for the lemon idea mamerth, I will try that.
