They medications are very strong. The CF bugs are tough so sometimes you need big guns to fight them. Our daughter was on these two meds when she was one year old also, for pseudo A. cultures. What I noticed was that she had NO good bacteria in her digestive tract left because these meds cleaned her out so she had AWFUL diaper rash to the point of open sores so I had to wash her bottom constantly and let her air dry a lot. She had the runs so this wasn't very easy. It was an all-day job for me. I did use barrier creams and Butt Paste which were both very helpful.
Yes, they give Cipro to the military folks with Anthrax. These meds are no joke. They are great against PA so she will benefit in the long run. Hang in there!

Best of Luck,
Michelle, mom to a six-yr.-old CF daughter and an Autistic son, now 10.

My DS was on tobi and cipro back in Nov and the cipro did give him diarrhea. I gave him more yogurt to give him some good bacteria. He had no side effects from the tobi.

We just finished up treatment with these a few weeks ago.

My son cultured PA at 3 months old. We first started with augmentin and TOBI and 1/2 way through we cultured him and it was still there, so we finished up the TOBI with cipro. As of his culture last week, the PA was gone! Fingers are crossed for our next culture!

He didn't get as bad of diarrhea with the cipro as he did with the bactrim and augmentin, but the cipro liquid is really some nasty stuff!!!

I also loaded up on probiotics for myself as he is breastfeeding so he'd get the probiotics from me and I try to give him some as well.

My son is 11 now and has cultured Pseudomonas aeruginosa several times over the years. We use a therapy where we do the Tobi every other month now and it seems to work very well with my son. Just make sure you don't do what we did. My son was prescribed Tobi when he was around 6 or so and we assumed we were to do this every day month after month. Finally on almost 1 1/2 years, one of our CF doctors caught this and instructed us to ONLY do this every other month.
