Like Jane said sometimes you have that gut feeling. Austin has been admitted from the clinic several times. Sometimes it was a drop in PFT's and other it was due to increase in cough and pft's down. And also when the doctor hear alot of crackles and pops in his lungs. But almost everytime I had a gut feeling something wasn't quite right.

Hi Sarah - Our experience at MBCHC is this: The two times Sophie's been admitted she had a cough that wouldn't go away with aggressive treatments, i.e. 3-4 vest treatments per day instead of 2, AND after oral antibiotics didn't work. We tried more than one course before admitting. She's generally healthy, so maybe with a child with more severe symptoms, or generally lower PFT's or BMI etc. they'd be more aggressive and admit sooner. So, don't worry. It most likely won't be unexpected if it happens.

The term "tune ups" varies. Some think of it as going in every 3 months to get to your peak even if you arent displaying any real issues. Some think its when you are showing symptoms & what you have tried at home doesnt work.

I think most of this is how the doctor treats his/her patient. For ME its always been because something has flared up & I cant get a handle on it at home. I have been admitted directly from clinic, but it was never a surprise. I know when its time even if I didnt want to admit it.

Now I am at the point that I call & say I need to come in. They dont ?? my need......because IF I call then they know its needed. Usually its when I have a virus with fevers & become dehydrated. Everything goes to hell with fevers for me.

I do believe that you learn that "gut instinct".

I think some of the surprise comes when a CFer doesnt do regular checkups because the problems sneak up & before you know it there is a real issue, but for those in the household its gradual. YET the clinic sees it as a BIG difference since there is more time in between.

Being scared is normal, but asking & being observant is important. In addition to knowing how your doctor responds.....are they proactive (admission every 3 months no matter what) or reactive (admit when issues arise & cant be taken care of at home).

HUGS to calm those fears!

When my oldest was younger we went to the CF clinic and he got admitted right then b/c his O2 level was only about 93. I now make it an effort to take my kids to the clinic when they aren't sick b/c I feel sometimes they overract and it is something that we can deal with at home.

If they are sick we will take them to their Pediatricin and she is one that won't admit them unless she feels it is not something that can't be handled at home. We haven't had that issue at all with our youngest son b/c of the overaction factor.
