What do docs consider when admitting for iv antibiotics?

Tammy, I am wondering if allergies are playing a role in my daughters situation as well. We haven't done any allergy testing but this time last year she was having issues when the weather started getting warmer and she was outside more. We are in Michigan and I am hearing that the pollen counts are already high. I am seeing her do the allergy nose rub. Last year we used Claritin but switched to Zyrtec at some point and it did seem to help.

I do hope things turn around for Kayla and you can keep her out of the hospital so she can play volleyball! Does she take anything for her allergies? Are the OTC remedies helpful or is she on a prescribed med?

Dragonlady - your picture is great -- love that huge bubble!

Pfts do play a big role in admission, sometimes even if there is no obvious symptoms. My son had a steady decline for a couple of months and after at home antibiotics and couple rounds of steroids, they would not come back up. While in the hosptial, they did a bronchoscopy, and found tons of inflammation. They realized that he had an asthmatic component that they were undertreating. After adding a different inhaled steriod and azithromycin to his regimen, and some iv steriods with the antibitoics, they came back up. We got him from 62% up to 77%.

I just wanted to add, even if your daughter is not doing the pfts perfectly, the docs can still see trends regardless of the effort. They can see decline.

There are a lot of clinics that believe in iv antibiotics once a year regardless of pfts... Just to give the body a boost. I forget which country does it, but they do iv's every 3 months around the year. So it all depends on your team.

anglesmom: I would have your daughter tested for allergies. I suggested it to our CF dr., who set up the test and came in when the results were ready. She takes Claritin every day of the year, and when it is peak 'tree and mold season' we add in Zyrtec...and eye drops and nose spray and anything I can find that seems to help <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
