What do you all do?

If one of the parents gets sick, like a cold or the flu (mild or severe) what would you do to protect your CF children from catching it? Like are there certain measures that should be considered when taking care of them?

I have an 8 week old baby and I'm her primary caregiver. I'm not sick or anything but I always wonder what will I do if I suddenly get a cold or the flu. I exclusively breastfeed her and practically spend every minute of everyday with her so I have no idea what to do in this case.

good handwashing, purell. You are breastfeeding and that is fabulous for building immunity to what you both are exposed to on a daily basis.

I try to change towels sheets often.

unfortunately, your baby will get a cold. I think my child without CF got his first cold at 9 months old...My 2nd child the one with CF got her first cold around 5 months...2nd child is much harder to shelter from germs CF or not.

I like to avoid the "bad germs" the hospital CF bacteria ones...I never let my daughter touch hospital elevator buttons or touch the hand rail at a hospital. She knows not to touch most things at the doctors office, I would not let her play with those communal doctor office toys! Yuck.

The first time I got a cold after DS was born, I wore a mask. He'd just spent 6 weeks in the hospital/nicu, and I was sooo concerned.

Usually I hand sanitize or wash hands constantly if I sneeze, before handling any meds, neb cups, food, anything that belongs to DS. Try to wipe things down with sanitizing wipes...

When one of us has gotten something worse -- last year DH got H1N1 while on a business trip and being that the vaccine wasn't yet available, DH stayed with his parents for several days. We also have a spare bedroom and finished lower level, so if need be one of us can escape altogether within the house.

'course I once awakened from a nap while recovering from bronchitis to find DS perched on my head because DH wasn't supervising. DS was fine. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I wear a mask but the thing is sometimes you are contagious even before you have symptoms (just happened last week). I also change towels and use a lot of sanitizer.

Being the mom with Cf, this is a concern of mine too. But I've found that there is really nothing you can do. Usually by the time your virus symptoms show up, others have already been exposed. I wash all my towels and sheets each day but I really think it doesn't matter much. Obvious things like not sharing drinking cups, food, frequent handwashing (for the whole family)
The best thing for her is breastfeeding.
I try to keep my immune system up by lots of rest, and good nutrition. So the breastmilk will give her the best protection she can get. At 8 wks, their little immune systems are SO strong!

You've really put my mind at ease. I was so scared someone was going to tell me that I should try and stay as far away from her as I can if I get sick...glad it's nothing like that <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
