What do you do with your life?

I was wondering what other CFer's do with their life because I have no idea what to do with mine. For example, does anyone have a job/hobby/anything else even though you have to go in the hospital and have doctor appointments frequently? I want a job (at least part time) but I don't know if I would be able to handle it with all of the coughing/fatigue and absents that I would have.

I worked for a while in offices, one at a medical office another at a massage school. Now I work part time/privately for a doctor making power points and typing up notes for his presentation. I'd like to go back to working normally part time but that isn't an option right now, I mostly try to spend time with my friends when possible and keep myself amused the rest of the time.

sure! i'm a lawyer, and when i was actively listed for transplant i was still working full time at a major wall street law firm. i did take disability to wait for lungs and get the transplant, and i'm still not sure when (or if) i'll go back to my former job -- but i know i want to go back and do something when i'm able!

by the time i was in college i was going into the hospital at least twice a year, and doing plenty of oral and inhaled abx. law school was slightly worse, and believe me i took plenty of time off during my job. but i don't regret a single instant of any of it. for one thing, working was FUN and gave me a sense of myself outside of CF. for another, it's practical - you get money and health insurance, and a good job will often offer disability benefits if/when you do need them. win-win situation, if you ask me.

obviously everyone's different. i'm on disability now, so of course i understand that sometimes you just can't have a job. but i really strongly encourage you to pursue your interests, whether through a job, volunteer work (which you can always leave for hospitalizations), or school. these are social activities and they really help keep CF from becoming your whole life in my experience. do as much or as little as you can honestly handle, but do what you love. and be extremely proud of yourself every second of it!

After I graduated highschool I worked in the food industry until I felt to sick to keep up.Since then ive just been on disbility and am at home, ive kinda let CF become my whole life which was a big mistake. When I kick this sick spell I plan on volunteering <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
Scrapbooking is a hobby that I enjoy that passes time as well.

Before I was a mom I worked in a doctors office for 2 years (40 hours a week), and pursued my passion on the side which was art. After that job, I managed to build up a good business of doing my art work full time. That was nice because I could make my own hours of course. Through both jobs I also juggled part time volunteer work.
At the doctors office they were very understanding of the time off that I'd need when I was on ivs. When I worked for myself it wasn't a huge problem, but I did miss out on one or two big art opportunities bc of being confined to the hospital.
Now I'm on my 9th year of marriage and a mom. Now thats a full time job! (but on the plus side, my boss can't fire me lol)
I can't say that I ever let my Cf stop me from pursuing whatever I wanted to do but I had to adjust what I could do at times. Overall, people were very understanding if I needed breaks or time off. When I was healthy I gave it my all, was honest, and had a good work ethic. Thats probably why when I needed a morning to for a doc appt, or 2 weeks for IVs-they were understanding. Its the same with being a mom. I don't have any days off from that! But if I need help or I'm sick, I have people to call to help me.

I work part-time doing bookkeeping for a small company and am a CPA. I found the position on Craigslist and the people here are great - the work is very flexible - and it keeps me doing something! Plus - the money is nice!

I love to scrapbook but have found that if given the opportunity, I would rather nap than scrap!

Find something that comes easily to you - something you know how to do, and see if you can find something to fit in the middle. Is there a gym nearby? Many of my friends work part time at the local gyms doing the front desk, etc. It might be too germy though.

Best of luck - again - try to find something you can do without stress - we have enough of that!
