Hi.. Its me...

I was wondering what you guys took for pain meds??? I never take narcotics because when I do, I without a doubt throw them up... I have tried Percs.. which are the worst and also Tylenol #3.. I can't hold them down.. I get loopy then without fail.. I throw them up.. I have tried them with food, without food..etc.... I also have a lot of trouble with anesthesia.. It takes me days to stop throwing up and for the feeling of sedation to leave I don't know if that is CF related or not could have something to do with the way my adrenal glands don't work....

I do best with tylenol and or motrin..but that isn't even touching the bone/joint pain I am having....So I was wondering what you guys take??? My dr would pretty much give me anything I ask for since he knows I am totally against narcotics and never take anything... I guess in a way being that I am going to be a nurse, it is probably a good thing I hate taking them...I don't think it is good for a nurse to Love taking pain meds but I do need to find some relief for this pain.......

Thanks for any help....

Hi Jenn, I am so sorry you are having such terrible bone pain right now. I have the same problems with Percs or Codeine, so what the docs do is give me an anti emetic to take prior to taking those meds...such as Phenergen or Zofran, it helps alot otherwise I toss my cookies too. Anesthesia is a nightmare with me also, the docs really load on the Zofran when I get any surgery because I get so sick from it. Maybe try Phenergen, compazine or Zofran prior to taking stronger meds might work for you, trust me on this one, my doc tried everything until she found out I could tolerate the Percocet if I took Phenergen about 20 mins prior to my dose. When I look back on that, I found that as a nurse, I often pre medicated people who had nausea vomiting issues with painkillers. What is really interesting is that I can tolerate Dilaudid IV without puking my brains out, had that when I got a chest tube....the body is a funny thing I guess. I hope you find relief soon. Many hugs to you, Jenn

Have you tried Naproxen. I am not a CFer but I have killer killer cramps that land me in the ER vomiting from the pain sometimes. The Naproxen works for me. Also, how about toradol (shot in the butt), that seems to work for narcotic sensitive people.

While we're on the subject, I have a sensitive liver, and if I take regular asprin for too long, I get a reaction, or at least that is my suspicion. I have more tendon pains than muscle, and can't recall what's on the market for that kind of pain.

Anyone who can help me out with some product names, will help in me searching in the internet for who will distribute it.

Jennifer, I hope Jenn and Julies suggestion helps you out.

Hi Jennifer...just wondering if you've tried taking codeine this way...

Cut it up into 4 quarters....drink some 7-up/sprite/ginger ale and eat a few saltine crackers, then take one of the quarters. Wait 10-15 mins, then repeat. This works for me about 80% of the time....

Thanks so much for your replies.. Amy, I have never taken a pill that way but I am willing to try anything.. In the past I have been able to tolerate codiene in my cough meds but for some reason in pill form... It just won't stay down..so thanks I will try it.. Vicoden for bone pain... I don't know that much about it, but I will ask my dr.

I had a great day today.. I just took advil every two to three hours and that helped a whole bunch... I love having pain free days.... It makes me feel so grateful....PLus having a day out shopping and eating with my loved one I am sure couldn't hurt...

I should find out tomorrow if all this pain is just arthritis or not.. which I am pretty sure it is...and I will ask about the pain meds.. I know at one point they said they would give me injections under floroscopy to help me .. So I will see

Thanks again... Oh as a side note.. I just read someone I know on another website got her call to get her new lungs tonight.. Please keep her in your prayers if you pray... and also the donors family as well.so bittersweet. Her name on the other site is TIkki.... she is wife and mother to a younger child....Pray for speedy recovery..

Have a great night

Jennifer

Thanks

Hi Jennifer! Try taking glucosamine sulfate tablets to alleviate joint pain/inflammation (they work if you take them consistently). Drinking green tea also rids the body of free radicals and nasty antiioxidants which have been known to increase the level of pain your experiencing...800 motrin tablets with a piece of bread/pretzel (something bland) also helps with inflammation and is easy on the stomach. Hope this helps...although I donnot have CF I am not able to handle any sort of meds and am also known to hoc them out...here-here to sensitive body systems! Keep smiling...

TextHI. I AM NEW TO THIS FORUM. I WAS DIAGNOSED WITH CF AT THE AGE OF 9 YRS. AND I AM NOW 31, WILL BE 32 FEB.23. I HAVE ONLY BEEN HOSPITALIZED ONCE ABOUT 3 MONTHS AGO WITH A SEVERE LUNG INFECTION AND HAD TO BE ON NUMEROUS IV ANTIBIOTICS PLUS ANTIBIOTIC BREATHING TREATMENTS. AFTER AN 8 DAY STAY I CAME HOME BUT MY HEALTH SEEMS TO GET WORSE EVERY DAY. I FIND THAT I HAVE TO TAKE NAPS THROUGHOUT THE DAY WHEN I USE TO GO NON-STOP EVERYDAY WITHOUT STOPPING, VERY DEPRESSING. I ALSO WAS DIAGNOSED WITH DIABETES IN 1997, I WAS DEVASTATED AT FIRST BUT NOW I AM USE TO IT, ALTHOUGH IT JUSTS ADDS TO THE PAIN OF THE CF. MY LAST 2 LUNG FUNTION TESTS WERE AT 46% THEN WENT UP TO 75%. THEY ARE BEGINING TO TALK"LUNG TRANSPLANT" AND THAT FRIGHTENS ME!! ABOUT THE PAIN MEDS, I STARTED OUT WITH ULTRAM BUT THEN IT STOPPED HELPING ANY AT ALL AND RELUCTENTLY I FINALLY HAD TO START ON LORCET. I DO NOT HAVE A WEAK STOMACH SO IT DOESN'T GIVE ME ANY TROUBLE. I TAKE THE HIGHEST DOSAGE TOO. PEOPLE WHO DON'T UNDERSTAND CF DO NOT REALIZE THAT THERE IS ALOT OF PHYSICAL PAIN ASSOCIATED WITH IT BUT AS I AM SURE YOU ALL KNOW, IT IS THERE! ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE DIABETES AS WELL WITH NEUROPATHY!! I REALLY HAVE NO-ONE TO TALK WITH ABOUT IT WHO UNDERSTANDS COMPLETELY. MY HUSBAND AND PARENTS TRY THEIR BEST BUT IT'S HARD FOR THEM BECAUSE THEY CANNOT "FEEL" THE PAIN. I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR FROM PEOPLE WITH CF WITH OR WITHOUT DIABETES SO YOU MAY E-MAIL ME OR JUST REPLY ON THIS SITE. IF I CAN ANSWER ANYONES QUESTIONS, JUST ASK. OH, I WEAR AN INSULIN PUMP FOR THE DIABETES AND AM ON OXYGEN AT NIGHT, THE OXYGEN JUST STARTED ABOUT 1 MONTH AGO.

Well if you cant take narcotics cause you get queesy, try taking it with Gravol. WAit, I think gravol is only available OTC in Canada which is whre im from. If you get narcotic pain killers, and live in the states, ask your doctor to also prescribe you dimenhydrinate. It is an anit nauseant. I more thank likely will puke with t3 or percocet, but never with dimenihydrinate. That might work for you.

Hello Rachel, welcome to the group! There are alot of wonderful people here, I haven't been a member long but I do see the caring these folks have (as well as their humor LOL!) I am 33, actually just diagnosed incidentally, have pancreatic insufficiency no DM though. I really do sympathize with you as far as your pain goes...neuropathy can be quite painful. My issues for pain stem mostly from my neuro disease...I also have muscular dystrophy and trust me when I say this, I tried everything to relieve my pain in any combonation. Right now, I have PT and OT come to the house and work with my arns and legs and to do exercises to relieve that tightness my muscles feel every day. But sometimes it isn't enough.....I am one of those sensitive people to pain meds, I usually pre medicate...have tried the crackers and eating something small prior to using the meds but that didn't work. Even tried Ultram, Vioxx when it was on the market (for my joint pain too), but finally settled on Vicodin or Percocet when the pain gets bad, or if I have really bad sinusitis. One thing or another, huh? Holler if you need anything or just want to vent. Hugs, Jenn

I take ibuprofen. I've been told by doc to take 3 or 4 OTC ones a time, 6-8hours apart. When that doesn't work darvocet
