What do you take your oral antibiotic with so you

My daughter is coughing, productive(but she swallows it) and was started on oral Duricef. She has taken this before without it bothering her stomach or making her throw up. She threw up about 1 1/2 hours after taking the first dose. Pharmacist thought she likely absorbed the med before throwing up. Now I am afraid the next time she takes it she'll throw up again.
Thought it could also be from her swallowing the mucus she is coughing up. She is 9 and stubborn. What food item would help her keep the antibiotic down? Suggestions?? I was thinking of ginger ale and saltines. She feels alot better after throwing up. Is this your body's way of helping get rid of mucus?

Give culturelle once a day as soon as you know an antibiotic is coming. Better yet give culturelle once a day always. My little one would throw up and get diarrhea dozen times a day on certain antibiotics. It was horrible. Culturelle stopped that.

We do culturelle every day; when on antibiotics we do it at least twice a day and then for a while after. She ate a good supper; then I am giving her her antibiotic an hour later with some pretzels. Hope it stays down!!

Is she feeling nauseous and then throwing up? If so, I'd think it's the antibiotic making her feel sick, and recommend she doesn't take it on an empty stomach.

If she isn't feeling nauseous, and just coughing and throwing up, it might be mucous in her stomach. I threw up a lot as a child and still do. If my antibiotic is once a day, I take it right before bed so that I go to sleep and keep it down. If it's twice a day, try giving her the other dose when she's going to be still for a while. If she's like me, when I move around a lot, I cough, and throw up!

I agree w/ everyone else.. It could be the mucus making her nauseous.. I too use Culturelle every day. I actually use CVS store brand for Culturelle & buy them when it is buy one get one as it can become expensive.
As far as eating before taking an oral abx I usually do.. I would give her what she likes. I like raisin toast w/ butter, sometimes a piece of cheese, im sure yogurt would be good , maybe cereal , easy on the tummy stuff..
Take care, joni

Only trouble I see is most antibiotics lose alot of the effectiveness if you take them with a dairy prodcut, seems to be it will bond to the animal fats/calsium then not be absorbed. I would also question the effectiveness an antibiotic has when taken with a probiotic at/around the same time. Bread butter not a bad idea, but when you start getting up into Yogert, Milk, Cheese... then I have my doubts.

Thanks for all your suggestions. No further puking. I have been careful not to give the antibiotic on an empty stomach or when she's eaten alot. I think yesterday; her belly did have mucus in it and she had been coughing alot; so the combo made her puke. Now her face is stuffed up, runny eyes, headache, coughing slightly less...

I always eat 4-5 crackers (saltines or club) with a little milk when I take any oral antibiotic.
My stomach is very sensitive but the crakers & milk regimen allows me to keep virtually any med down without a problem.
Best of luck to you & a Happy, Healthy New Year to all.
