Is he on steroids? aka the root of all evil
anyway, when I'm on steriods I have CFRD, but when I'm not I don't. complex, but it happens. Track his bloodsugars and stuff, but its pretty unusual for kids to get it- adults, not so much. However, if he has been on steroids as a treatment for prolonged periods of time over large portions of his life- it could be it. also might want to get him tested for growth hormone stuff- steroids
1. give me CFRD
2. stunted growth. was supposed to be 5'5, done growing and 4'11 and 3/4
3. reduced body's capacity to produce growth hormone
and some personal stuff we wont get into ;-)
after all this I finally made one word clear to the doctor with steroid perscriptions already written and in his pocket in case of a cough- "NO"

I think there are just times with CF that we become snarfing machines. I frequently am very hungry and can just eat and eat and eat. I just went through Glucose tolerance testing (insulin and blood sugars over a several hour period) which was normal. But that same day (after the test) I got one of my several day long snarf attacks as I call them. So it could just be an appetite! ~Juliet

Our pediatrician thought our dd with CF had type 1 diabetes last year. They put her in the hospital for a day so that we could see the Diabetes specialist. The Diabetes doctor said she was too young for CFRD so it had to be Type 1.

We could have saved ourselves a lot of anguish if we'd talked to our CF doctor first. We saw him several days later and he said "no way. it's not type 1 diabetes. It's just a reaction to her bladder infection. Though, it's highly likely that she will have CFRD when she's older."

Bladder infections also cause a lot of peeing and thirst. Just make sure you talk to your CF doctor and rule out any infection that can cause a spike in blood sugar.
